CID’s Invitation Is Faulty – A.I Fuseini

Alhaji Inusah Fuseini - Member of Parliament for Tamale Central Constituency

Member of Parliament for Tamale Central Constituency, Alhaji Inusah Fuseini has said the invitation to him by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), over comments he made to insinuate that former President John Dramani Mahama should declare himself president and form a parallel government is defective.

He indicated that investigations are not done into comments but rather into crimes or alleged crimes and so the invitation in itself is not in order.

That notwithstanding, he said, he is consulting his lawyers over the invitation.

“The invitation has a major defect. They say I should come and assist them in an investigation into comments I have made on Pan African TV, which comment they quoted, but investigations are not into comments. They are into crimes or alleged crimes and so the invitation itself is deficient.

“Because I have the constitutional right to be told the nature of the offense that is being investigated which has not been but all the same, I do think that my lawyers will advise me on the best possible line of action in terms of the invitation to the police,” he said.

Background Information

Appearing on a programme on Pan African Television on Saturday, December 12, the lawyer and lawmaker stated; “I have said and I have advocated that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, John Dramani Mahama, and former president of the Republic of Ghana declares himself President and forms a parallel government.”

He continued by saying; “[Mr. Mahama] should declare himself president and set up a parallel government. The impunity of this government is too much that is how we stop it.”

Consequently, the CID launched investigations into these comments made by the Member of Parliament as they have been considered treasonable.

Director-General of the Department, COP Isaac Ken Yeboah, subsequently, wrote to the Speaker of Parliament, Reverend Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, for the release of the MP to assist in investigations.

The Speaker, upon receiving the letter from the Director-General of the CID, wrote to the Tamale Central Member, through the Clerk to Parliament, to make himself “available for the interaction with the Ghana Police on Thursday 24th December 2020 at 10 am at the CID Headquarters, 2nd Floor, Room 2”.

However, after 4:00pm when the CID closed official duties, the NDC MP had not showed up.

Howbeit, the Criminal Investigations Department is considering the use of other alternatives to get Alhaji Inusah Fuseini to assist in investigations.

The Public Relations Officer of the CID, DSP Juliana Obeng told the media that the police are constitutionally mandated to get a witness to assist in any investigations whatsoever. Hence, the Police were working in its legal purview in inviting the Member of Parliament to come and assist investigation.
