EPL Review: United paint Manchester red with Derby victory

Manchester United have ended Manchester City’s 28-game unbeaten run with a shock 2-0 victory at the Etihad Stadium. An early goal in each half from Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw was enough to stun the league leaders. derby

United took an early lead  courtesy a Bruno Fernandes penalty after Gabriel Jesus’ foul on Anthony Martial just 34 seconds in.

Manchester City assumed control of possession after that and hit the bar through Rodri at the start of the second half.  Moments later, Shaw drove forward to finish a team move he started to secure United the derby win.

Pep Guardiola’s side lead Manchester United with 11 points with 10 games still to play.

Burnley 1-1 Arsenal

Burnley and Arsenal played out a 1-1 draw at Turf Moor with Granit Xhaka gifting Burnley an equalizer.

Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang put Arsenal in control with a neat finish as early as the 6th minute. However, with Arsenal cruising, Xhaka bizarrely decided to play a pass across his own six-yard box. The ball in turn deflects off Chris Wood’s hip into an empty net for a Burnley equalizer. 

With 10 minutes to go, VAR overturned a decision by the referee to hand Arsenal a penalty. This was after Eric Pieters appeared to handle a Nicholas Pepe cross in his 18-yard box.

The result means Arsenal have taken only eight points from their last seven games, leaving them in mid-table.

Liverpool 0-1 Fulham

Fulham beat Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield, condemning the champions to a sixth successive home defeat.

Mario Lemina scored the game’s only goal after capitalizing on poor defending by Mohamed Salah on the stroke of half-time.

Substitute Sadio Mane clipped the crossbar in the second half in the closest chance Liverpool had to salvage the game. The champions have now failed to win for an eighth consecutive game at Anfield for the first time since 1958.

Tottenham 4-1 Crystal Palace derby

Harry Kane set up two goals for Gareth Bale and scored two himself Tottenham beat Crystal Palace 4-1.

Bale opened the scoring, tapping home Kane’s cross. But Palace equalized on the stroke of halftime through Christian Benteke’s superb header from Luka Milivojevic’s cross.

Spurs regained their lead through Bale’s sixth goal in six games, scoring with a close-range header from another Kane assist.

Kane secured the win by with a stunning curled shot into the top-left corner from the edge of the box. He added his second and Spurs fourth in the 76th minute, simply finishing off a fine team move.

The result means Spurs move up to sixth, just two points off the top four with 11 games remaining.

Brighton 1-2 Leicester

Leicester city beat Brighton 2-1 at the Amex courtesy Daniel Amartey’s late header from a Robert Sanchez error.

Brighton took the lead in the first half through Adam Lallana’s first goal for Brighton. The midfielder composed himself to slot past Kasper Schmeichel from Neal Maupay’s slipped pass.

Leicester improved after the break and Kelechi Iheanacho’s cool finish from a brilliant Youri Tielemans levelled things up. Amartey then capitalised on Sanchez’s error in the final minute, reacting to convert from a corner after the goalkeeper missed his punch.

Aston Villa 0-0 Wolves

Romain Saiss’ shocking second-half miss saw Aston Villa and Wolves play out an entertaining goalless draw.

Aston Villa hit the woodwork twice in a first half they dominated through Ollie Watkins and Ezri Konsa. Then with an empty net to aim at, Saiss’s  effort went over the bar from a yard out, after Conor Coady’s header struck the post.

The result leaves Villa in ninth place with 40 points from 26 games, while Wolves remain in 12th on 35 points. derby

Sheffield United 0-2 Southampton derby

A James Ward-Prowse penalty and a powerful Che Adams volley gave Southampton a 2-0 victory over Sheffield United. The result is their first win in 10 games.  

Ward-Prowse fired in the opener from the spot after Nathan Tella had been fouled by Ethan Ampadu. Southampton doubled their lead after clearance from John Lundstram was nodded straight to Adams. The striker volleyed a shot past Aaron Ramsdale from 20 yard to secure victory for the Saints.

West Brom 0-0 Newcastle derby

West Brom and Newcastle played out a goalless draw in a game lacking goal-mouth action at the Hawthorns.

The Baggies created the better opportunities but couldn’t take advantage of the 29 crosses they put into the Newcastle box. The gap between the two clubs remains at nine points and Sam Allardyce’s side are eight points from safety.
