Chad: Deby’s son, Mahamat Deby, named ‘President of the republic’

Chad’s presidency has released a charter stating that General Mahamat Idriss Deby, the son of slain leader, Idriss Deby, will take over as President in place of his father.

The charter noted that the 37-year-old, who was swiftly named;transitional leader following his father’s death, will “occupy the functions of the President of the republic”.

According to the terms in the charter, it has repealed;the preceding constitution and will be implemented as the “basic law of the republic”. firstly

Mahamat Deby will promulgate legislation;adopted;by;the 69 members of the national transition council, who are named directly by him. however,

“The members of the army who are;called to the transition government are;discharged;from all military duties,” the charter added.

Transition charter further

Mahamat Deby is;best known as a top commander of the Chadian forces assisting a United Nations peacekeeping mission in the north of neighbouring Mali.

He had overseen his father’s security as head of the elite presidential guard and had often appeared alongside him. despite

The Transition Charter, which contains 95 articles, also guarantees “freedom of opinion, conscience and worship.”

Rebels threaten to depose Mahamat Deby

The rebel group blamed for the death of President Idriss Deby has;threatened;to depose Mahamat Deby, after he was named;leader of the country. moreover,

The group, Front for Change and Concord in Chad (FACT), revealed;in a statement that its forces were “heading toward N’Djamena at this very moment”.

“Chad is not a monarchy. There can be no dynastic devolution of power in our country.” firstly

FACT as a result

Meanwhile, officials of the Transitional Military Council have acknowledged that the fight was not yet over for control of the country.

Addressing reporters, the council’s Vice President, Djimadoum Tiraina, alluded to the persistence of the “terrorist threat”.

“The security situation remains highly serious given the persistence and magnitude of the terrorist threat. The military must now prevent the country from sinking into chaos and anarchy.”

Deby son

According to revoked Chadian constitution, the speaker of parliament should have taken power after Deby’s death. In an interview, Cameron Hudson, a senior fellow with the Africa Center at the Atlantic Council intimated that the coronation of Mahamat Deby has created “uncertainties”.

“There is a great deal of uncertainty around how events in Chad will unfold; whether the army will stay loyal to Deby’s son and continue the effort to repel the advancing rebels.

“Chadians fed up after 30 years of Deby’s rule, could also align with demands for a leadership change. Either scenario presents a high risk of civilian casualties and a likelihood that fleeing civilians or soldiers could export Chad’s instability to neighboring states”.

The United Nations has about 1,800 staff members in Chad and has stated that it is “watching the situation hour by hour”.
