Wait on GPRTU- Concerned Drivers on Fare Increment

The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana (C-DAG), has urged all drivers to wait for the outcome of the engagement between GPRTU and the government before increasing fares.

In a communique, it urged commercial drivers in the various transport unions to restrain themselves;from increasing transport fares as it was scheduled to take place today.

“We urge our members to wait on the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU),; Cooperative and PROTOA executives as they continue to engage government through the Ministry of Transport on;the favorable amount of percentage for the adjustment.”

According to the Association, the move by some drivers to increase transport fares, is uncalled for. It then urged the general public to disregard any increment in transport fares as announced by the group.

“We have noted with concern, a communique issued by another union urging drivers to increase transport fares by 20 percent. C-DAG would want to categorically state that;even though the welfare of members of this association remains paramount and supreme over all other interests,;we cannot allow our members to act in contravention of the law and principles.”

20% fare increment takes effect May 17- Private Transport Operators

This comes on the back of Private Transport Operators announcing a 20% increment in transport fares yesterday.

Over the past week, there has been some issues raised by both drivers;and passengers with regards to the increase in fuel prices. Whiles drivers lament on the inconvenience the increase has caused them, commuters have also complained about the suggested increase in the fares.

But, the GPRTU based on the concerns assured that;they are in an engagement with government to bring a solution to the problem.

General Secretary of GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire
Ignore fare increase

Meanwhile, the GPRTU has today asked passengers to ignore the purported 20 percent increment in fares announced by other private transport operators.

The General Secretary of GPRTU, Godfred Abulbire, described the said increment as unfair to commuters.

“When we are even given the freehand by the government to adjust the fares the way we want, you think the GPRTU will increase it by beyond 20 percent? If you go by more than 30 percent, you are virtually killing your business because the effect actually goes to the customers who put us in business. So, we are mindful of that.

“Those who have planned to increase the fares are on the minute side,;but GPRTU and GRCC cut across the whole country and the mother body that hosts all other transport unions. So, we ask our customers and the general public to ignore the publication because it does reflect the true decision of what GPRTU is negotiating with the government.”

Godfred Abulbire

According to reports also, the increment which was announced by the Private Operators Union has not yet taken place at any station as at now.

The intended increase came from the Ghana Committed Drivers Association, International Drivers Road Transport Union, Truth Drivers Union, Concerned Drivers Association as well as some other unions and associations.
