Weekend review: Leicester beat Chelsea to lift FA Cup for first time

Leicester City beat Chelsea 1-0 in front of 21,000 fans at the Wembley stadium to win the club’s first FA Cup.

Chelsea dominated proceedings in the first half but struggled to create clear cut chances in the goalless half.

Leicester City improved in the second half and took the lead through Youri Tielemans’ brilliant shot into the top corner after 63 minutes.

Leicester’s keeper, Kasper Schmeichel was then forced into two fantastic saves at the other end, pushing a Chilwell header onto the post and then pulling off another wonderful stop to deny Mason Mount, as Chelsea desperately searched for a response.

Chelsea thought they had gotten an equalizer through Ben Chilwell in the 89th minute, but VAR rightly spotted the Chelsea man had strayed marginally offside in the build-up.

The foxes managed to hang on to secure another historic moment for the club.

Newcastle 3-4 Man City

Newly crowned premier league champions, Manchester City secured a thrilling 4-3 victory against Newcastle at the St. James Park.

Newcastle took the lead when Emil Krafth nodded home his first top-flight goal.  However, City replied with two quick goals as Joao Cancelo equalized for City before and Ferran Torres put the Champions in front in the 42nd minute.

In the second minute of injury time, Nathan Ake’s clumsy challenge saw Joelinton fouled in the area. Joelinton then hammered home from the penalty spot to leave the score 2-2 at halftime.

The second half continued in the same vein as Newcastle were awarded another penalty just after the hour, after Kyle Walker fouled Joe Willock. This time, Willock stepped up and scored from the rebound after seeing his penalty saved by Carson.

Torres then equalized and added a fourth for City with a couple of smart finishes. His hattrick earned the Cityzens all three points in a hard-fought contest.

West Brom 1-2 Liverpool

Liverpool goalkeeper, Alisson scored a stunning injury-time headed winner to secure a 2-1 victory for the Reds against West Brom, keeping their top-four hopes alive.

Hal Robson-Kanu gave West Brom the lead with his first Premier League goal since November 2017. Liverpool responded well and equalized soon after through Mohammed Salah’s brilliant low, left-foot shot into the far corner.

The game was headed for a draw when dramatically, in the 95th minute, Allison brilliantly headed home Trent Alexander-Arnold’s set-piece.

The victory keeps Liverpool’s Champions League qualifying hopes alive, moving them one point behind fourth-placed Chelsea.

Tottenham 2-0 Wolves

Tottenham Hotspurs beat Wolves 2-0 to move up to sixth on the Premier League table to keep their top four ambitions alive.

Harry Kane opened the scoring for the hosts with his 22nd Premier League goal of the season on the stroke of half-time.

Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg then slotted home Spurs’ second following the interval after Rui Patricio diverted Gareth Bale’s shot straight into his path.

The result sees Spurs leapfrog West Ham into sixth place on 59 points, five points adrift of Chelsea in fourth.

Brighton 1-1 West Ham

West Ham scored a late equalizer in their 1-1 draw against Brighton, to keep hopes of finishing in the top four alive.

In a rather dull game lacking goalmouth action, Danny Welbeck danced through West Ham’s defence to give Brighton the lead in the 82nd minute.

However, Siad Benrahma came off the bench to curl home a fantastic equalizer for the Hammers in the 87th minute.

Everton 0-1 Sheffield United

Relegated Sheffield United secured a 1-0 victory over Everton at the Goodison Park.

The visitors scored the only goal of the game through 17-year-old Daniel Jebbison in the 7th minute.

Everton probed for an equalizer but were denied by some impressive defending from the blades.

Crystal Palace 3-2 Aston Villa

Crystal Palace came from behind to beat Aston Villa 3-2 at Selhurst Park.

Villa started with purpose and got the lead when John McGinn – drilled home a low shot from outside the box.

Christian Benteke then scored to level it up for Palace in the 32nd minute. But Anwar El Ghazi lashed home two minutes later after some sloppy defending from Gary Cahill to give Villa a 2-1 lead at halftime.

Wilfried Zaha kickstarted the comeback for Palace in the 75th minute before Tyrick Mitchell scored the winner six minutes from time.

Burnley 0-4 Leeds

Leeds United secured an impressive 4-0 win at Burnley to cement their hopes of a top-half finish.

Mateusz Klich gave the visitors the lead before halftime, curling a shot home from 20 yards.

Jack Harrison doubled the lead on the 60th minute before substitute, Rodrigo wrapped up the result with two quickfire goals in the 74th and 76th minute.

Southampton 3-1 Fulham

Southampton beat already-relegated Fulham 3-1 at St Mary’s.

The hosts took the lead in the 27th minute from the game’s first shot on target as Che Adams fired home from close range.

They doubled their lead on the hour mark when substitute, Nathan Tella, tapped the ball into the net just minutes after coming on to the field.

Fabio Carvalho pulled one back for Fulham in the 75th minute but Theo Walcott soon restored Southampton’s two-goal lead as his deflected shot went past Alphonse Areola.
