Anthony Joshua Pulled From Wreckage After Horror Nigeria Crash That Claims Two Lives

Global boxing icon Anthony Joshua has been injured in a fatal road accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two people, sparking widespread concern across the sporting world and beyond.

The crash occurred on Monday along the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway in Ogun State, a major transport corridor known for heavy commercial traffic and frequent accidents.

Joshua, a former heavyweight world champion and one of Britain’s most recognisable sports figures, was travelling as a passenger in a Lexus Jeep when the vehicle collided with a stationary red commercial Sinotruck. Authorities confirmed that the truck had reportedly broken down on the road prior to the crash. Two male foreign nationals were pronounced dead at the scene, according to preliminary reports released by the Ogun State Government.

Joshua rescued by security personnel

Officials say Anthony Joshua, who was seated in the back of the vehicle, sustained minor injuries in the crash. He and the driver were rescued from the wreckage by security personnel who were travelling with him. Two other passengers in the vehicle reportedly escaped without injuries.

An eyewitness account provided further details of the moments following the impact. The witness said the Lexus Jeep rammed into a large truck transporting soybeans, which had broken down on the road a day earlier. The collision caused extensive damage to the truck, including the destruction of its tyres.

According to the witness, Joshua remained inside the damaged vehicle for nearly ten minutes after the crash before bystanders recognised him and called out, helping him regain consciousness. Personnel from the Nigerian Road Safety Corps later arrived at the scene and cleared the damaged truck from the expressway to restore traffic flow.

Conflicting accounts and investigation ordered

Authorities have given varying explanations regarding the circumstances leading to the accident, highlighting the need for a full investigation. Ogun State Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo confirmed that an official inquiry has been ordered to determine the precise cause of the collision and establish any liability.

The Ogun State Government, in a statement, noted that while initial findings confirm the deaths of two foreign nationals, further details including identities and nationalities would be released once investigations are completed and families have been notified.

Road safety advocates have once again raised concerns about the dangers posed by broken down heavy-duty vehicles left unattended on major highways, a recurring issue on Nigerian roads that has resulted in numerous fatalities over the years.

Boxing world reacts to shocking incident

The news of the crash triggered an outpouring of concern from fans, fellow athletes, and boxing stakeholders worldwide. Jake Paul, the YouTuber turned boxer who lost to Joshua earlier this month, took to social media to express his sympathy.

“Life is much more important than boxing. I am praying for the lost lives, AJ and anyone impacted by today’s unfortunate accident,” Paul wrote, reflecting a rare moment of unity following their recent bout.

Joshua’s promoter, Matchroom Boxing, also responded cautiously as details of the incident continued to emerge. Eddie Hearn, chairman of Matchroom Boxing, said he woke up to news of the crash while on holiday and was attempting to establish contact with the boxer.

“We are trying to contact Anthony and in the meantime we do not want to speculate on how he is but thankfully he appears OK from what I have seen in the images,” Hearn said. “We are awaiting more information on what has happened and will update in due course.”

Strong ties to Nigeria

Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua, born in Watford, England, has consistently expressed pride in his Nigerian heritage. His family traces its roots to Sagamu in south west Nigeria, where the Joshua name has been prominent for generations. His great grandfather, Daniel Adebambo Joshua, was a wealthy landowner and merchant who adopted the Joshua surname after converting to Christianity.

Joshua’s connection to Nigeria is visibly symbolised by the tattoo of the African continent on his right shoulder, with Nigeria clearly outlined. During his professional fights, the Nigerian flag is frequently displayed alongside the Union Jack, underscoring his dual identity. This was again evident following his recent victory against Jake Paul, when both flags were shown prominently in the ring.

In Ogun State, where Joshua serves as a sports ambassador, authorities have announced plans to build a new indoor boxing arena named in his honour, further reflecting his influence and popularity within the region.

Renewed calls for road safety reforms

The tragic crash has reignited discussions around highway safety, vehicle breakdown protocols, and enforcement of traffic regulations in Nigeria. The Lagos-Ibadan expressway, despite recent upgrades, continues to witness fatal accidents linked to stalled trucks, speeding, and poor visibility.

As investigations continue, attention remains focused on Joshua’s recovery and the families of the victims who lost their lives in the crash. While the boxing star is expected to make a full recovery, the incident serves as a sobering reminder of the human cost of road safety failures.
