Manchester City have completed the signing of Ghana forward Antoine Semenyo from AFC Bournemouth, securing the services of one of the Premier League’s most in demand attackers on a five and a half year contract that will keep him at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.
The move marks a major step in the 26 year old’s career and underlines City’s intent to refresh their attacking options with players entering their prime. Semenyo arrives in Manchester after a rapid rise in English football that has seen him develop from a promising Championship prospect into one of the Premier League’s most feared forwards.
Born in London to Ghanaian parents, he began his professional journey at Bristol City, where his early years were shaped by patience and perseverance. Loan spells at Bath City, Newport County and Sunderland provided him with regular game time and exposed him to the physical and tactical demands of English football at different levels.
His breakthrough came at Ashton Gate, where consistent performances earned him recognition as Bristol City’s Young Player of the Year and attracted growing interest from top flight clubs. Bournemouth moved decisively in January 2023 to bring him to the Premier League, a decision that quickly proved justified.
Semenyo adapted swiftly to the pace and intensity of the top division and went on to thrive under successive managers, particularly after Andoni Iraola’s arrival in the summer of 2023.

Operating mainly from the left side of an attacking midfield trio, Semenyo became a central figure in Bournemouth’s attacking play. His blend of pace, power and direct running made him a constant threat, while his improving end product elevated his status across the league.
He recorded eight goals and three assists in the 2023/24 season, followed by 11 league goals and 13 in all competitions the next year. In the current campaign, he has already reached double figures in the Premier League, including standout performances against Liverpool and Tottenham.
City’s Dominance and Guardiola’s Factor
Speaking after completing the move, the forward expressed immense pride at joining a club he has long admired. He described City as the dominant force in English football over the past decade and highlighted the opportunity to work with Guardiola as a major factor in his decision.
“They have also achieved amazing things in the Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup. They have set the highest standards and it is a club with world class players, world-class facilities, and one of the greatest managers ever.”

The Ghana international believes the timing of the move is ideal for his development. According to Semenyo, the environment at City offers the perfect platform for further improvement and growth, and he is confident that his best football still lies ahead.

“I have so much scope for improvement, so to be at this club at this stage of my career is perfect for me. It is a real privilege to be here. My best football is yet to come and City are in a great position, still involved in four competitions.
“I really feel I can help the team have a strong second half of the season. The Etihad is my new home and I cannot wait to play in front of the fans.”

Club Most Wanted Player
Manchester City Director of Football Hugo Viana was equally enthusiastic about the signing, describing Semenyo as the player the club most wanted during the January window.
“Antoine is a really excited signing for the football club. He made it clear to us immediately that it was City he wanted to join. His enthusiasm for this club has been clear throughout the process.”
Manchester City Director of Football Hugo Viana
Viana praised his enthusiasm, humility, and professionalism, noting that he combines proven Premier League experience with significant room for development. He highlighted Semenyo’s two-footed ability, power, and influence on matches as qualities that align perfectly with City’s playing philosophy.

“He has shown he can perform in the Premier League. He is humble, hard working, professional, and totally focused on being a better footballer. He is ideal for us.”
Manchester City Director of Football Hugo Viana
Beyond his club achievements, Semenyo brings valuable international experience. He has established himself as a key member of the Ghana national team, earning 32 caps and representing the country at the 2022 World Cup. His performances for the Black Stars have further enhanced his reputation as a forward capable of delivering on the biggest stage.
City expect Semenyo to integrate quickly into Pep Guardiola’s attacking system, which prioritises intelligence, movement and technical excellence. His versatility allows him to operate across the front line, offering Guardiola tactical flexibility as the club competes on multiple fronts in the second half of the season.
Immediate Selection
Semenyo is available for immediate selection and is eligible to feature in the upcoming Carabao Cup semi final first leg at Newcastle. For Semenyo, the move represents the culmination of years of steady progress and self belief.
For Manchester City, it is an investment in a player entering the peak years of his career, one whose journey has been defined by resilience and consistent improvement.

As he begins a new chapter at the Etihad, expectations are high that his speed, strength and eye for goal will add a fresh dimension to City’s already formidable attack.
