Isaac Ken Yeboah, Director General, CID of the Ghana Police Service, has revealed that suspected murderers of the late Mfantseman East legislator, Ekow Quansah Hayford have been slapped with an initial conviction of 20 years.
Speaking at a media briefing at the CID Headquarters, COP Yeboah revealed that investigation was taken over by the CID headquarters and some suspects were initially arrested. He further explained that, the mobile phone of the late Mfantesman MP was retrieved in Kumasi.
“Whiles investigation was ongoing, some armed robbers numbering about six attacked vehicles on the Obuasi highway on the 11th of May, 2021 at about 2am. The patrol team encountered them and in the ensuing shootout, one of the robbers later identified as Mohammed was killed and three others arrested”.
He further revealed that based on their arrest, the suspect revealed that the deceased, Mohammed was the mastermind in the murder of the Mfantseman MP.
“During investigation, they admitted having taken part in the attack and murder of the late honourable Ekow Quansah Hayford. They were charged with the robbery based on the facts of the May 11, 2021 incident. On the 18th of June, this year after the trial, they were convicted and sent to 20 years imprisonment each”.
Conviction of armed robbers
The Director General of CID further noted that all the convicts are to be arraigned in court with respect tp the robbery and murder of the late Mfantseman MP.
“It means that, we are now going to charge them and trial them for the murder of the honourable Ekow Quansah Hayford. So, out of the six, we’ve been able to arrest four”.
Additionally, COP Yeboah vowed to arrest armed robbers perpetuating crimes in the country in recent times.
“It is unfortunate that some criminal gangs have acted boldly in broad daylight to perpetrate their nefarious activities some few days ago, leading to the death of one of our own. The Police intelligence network has devised modernised way to make their nefarious activities unpleasant. We shall surely arrest them all”.
Police retrieve ammunition from Ntoaso
As part of the security measures adopted by police administration under the new anti-armed robbery task force to fight crime, COP Yeboah revealed that, a source gave intelligence on possession of ammunitions by some armed robbers.
“In response to the intelligence gathered, the team from the National Operations Directorate… were dispatched to the location to retrieve the said weapons. On reaching the location, the suspected robbers took to their heels on seeing the police”.
Furthermore, the Director General revealed that one of the suspected armed robbers opened fire, injuring a police officer. He explained that the said officer, who had his two fingers injured is currently on admission.
COP Yeboah disclosed that two persons were gunned down in the ensuing confrontation between the police and robbers.
“These are the items that were retrieved from them, one AK47 rifle, one M16 rifle, one pomp action gun, one short gun… 2, 882 rounds of AK47 ammunition”.
