NADMO yet to distribute items to flood victims- U/W NADMO coordinator

The National Disaster Management Association (NADMO), has indicated that it is yet to distribute some relief items to persons who have been displaced by the Upper West floods.

The Upper West coordinator of NADMO, Mustapha Ahmed,;disclosed that the water levels have now receded and as such his outfit will direct the Assembly members to who deserves the assistance.

He also revealed that together with his team,;they will go and survey and secure safe routes which will enable them get access to the displaced victims in the various communities.

“We have some relief items we are to dispatch to the individuals in those affected communities. So, we are going to the communities to see which appropriate roads we can use to distribute those items we have in our warehouse now.

“We want to use the pickups first on the roads that we can use,;and then we will call on the team to bring the materials to the individuals. We are going to give them rice,;we have cooking oil, blankets, used clothing, plastic buckets, spoons, cups and mattresses amongst other items.”

He also stated that with persons that have been affected,;some have evacuated and that’s where his team is sending the mattresses to.

At least six areas in the Upper West region have been cut off since due to the rains. And as such, he revealed that heavy duty drivers who ply the area have been stranded as most of the routes have been affected.

12-hour downpour causes Upper West floods

This disaster follows an over 12-hour downpour in the Upper West Region on Friday which flooded irrigation sites,;farmlands, and communities along the Nadowli-Tangasie highway in the Upper West Region.

The flood washed off major roads in the area, with many commuters getting stranded due to the situation.

Major bridges on the Wa-Hale road that connect the Nadow-Kaleo district,;Jirapa, Lawra, and the Nadom municipalities to Wa the Upper West regional capital;were also affected with portions of the already deplorable Wa-Tumu road also washed off.

1,605 people affected by flood

According to the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO),;it reveals that some 1,605 people in the Nadowli-Kaleo District, Jirapa District, and Lawra Municipality in the Upper West Region were affected by recent floods in the region.

According to NADMO, as of Friday, it was difficult for them to give an assessment of the situation at hand. But it indicated that after some information gathering, it has gathered that about 722 farms have been washed away.

About 1,605 people also have had their farmlands washed away,;336 people displaced, 155 houses destroyed and about three districts affected. The districts are the Nadowli-Kaleo district, Jirapa district, and the Lawra municipalities.

Meanwhile, the Upper West Regional Minister, Dr Hafiz Bin Salih,;has noted that for the region to recover from the floods that has greatly affected the residents in the districts hit by the floods,;it needs massive intervention.
