Anti-LGBTQ+ Bill, bold attempt to bring finality on Ghana’s position- Francis-Xavier

Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis-Xavier Sosu

A legal practitioner, Chris Ackumey, has intimated that the police during this time has displayed an “anti-civil behavior” which has led the Madina MP to use all constitutional means of resisting arrest.

Commenting on the recent bench warrant issued for the arrest of the MP, lawyer Ackumey stated that the Member of Parliament for Madina, Francis Xavier Sosu resisting the police arrest is justified.

“I sincerely believe that the failure of Sosu to report to the Police stems from the Police anti-civil behavior by even attempting to arrest him at church of all places”.

Chris Ackumey

The Legal practitioner averred that the Member of Parliament’s situation can be likened to that of a “blazing fire”. He questioned why the Police expects the MP to go to the police station or honor an invitation when the same police tried to arrest him in the house of God on a Sunday.

“Honestly, if you see a blazing fire, will you carry a gallon of petrol near the fire? You won’t do it. It will be just stupidity or foolishness to carry petrol to a blazing fire”.

Chris Ackumey

Lawyer Ackumey averred that if for any reason or the other, Francis Sosu is using parliament and constitution as a shield, he has a basis to do so. He stated that the police did not do well in the first place.

His comments come after the Kaneshie District Court issued a bench warrant for the arrest of a Member of Parliament (MP) for Madina, Mr Francis-Xavier Kojo Sosu.

This followed the failure of the MP to appear in court for the third time after he was provisionally charged for unlawfully blocking a public road and the destruction of public property.

The court presided over by Mr. Isaac Oheneba-Kuffour, issued the bench warrant following an application by the prosecutor, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Sylvester Asare.

Madina MP files stay of execution

The Member of Parliament for Madina, has however filed a stay of execution and an order setting aside a bench warrant issued by the Kaneshie District Court.

In a statement signed by the MP, he stated that the two applications before the High Court would be heard on December 9, this year. He disclosed that both actions have been duly served on the Attorney General and the Ghana Police Service and prosecutors in the case.

“I am hoping that the Ghana Police Service and the Attorney General, having been properly served with these processes, will respect the dictates of Rule of Law and abide by the laws of the Republic of Ghana until we meet in court for consideration of the respective motion filed against the warrant, criminal summons and the motions intended to enforce my fundamental human rights.”

Francis Xavier Sosu

The MP maintained that he had not committed any crime and would not subject himself to any unlawful arrest, detention and malicious prosecution. The MP noted that he considers the Police action and the recent bench warrant as a deliberate attack on him and his family.

This, he noted, is coupled with strange men following him and seen around his residence and office areas, which highly endangers his life and that of his family and workers.
