The Ghana Union Traders Association (GUTA) has issued a directive to its members to stop trading along all public walkways in the Greater Accra Region.

The Director of Welfare at GUTA, Benjamin Yeboah, indicated that the grace period the traders were given has come to an end.

“We’ve told our members who have been selling on these walkways that the holidays are over and we plead that they go back to where they were before the Christmas festivities.”

According to Benjamin Yeboah, the minister urged the Association to report to the various MCE’s if its members are in need at the places they relocate to.

“Therefore, we are appealing to all our members that if they have any problem, they should let us know for us to alert the MCEs so that we can find a way of taking care of that situation before February 1, 2022.”

Touching on the engagement so far with its members, Benjamin Yeboah disclosed that engagements are currently ongoing with members at the various centres across the region by the District Executives.

Commenting on the materialization of the campaign to ensure Greater Accra is clean, the GUTA welfare Director stated that it would work out.

“One thing we’ve learnt from this Minister is that, he does not mince words when he is working. And therefore, we will advise our members that it’s important they adhere to what he is saying.”

GUTA’s directive comes as government’s decongestion exercise starts on February 1, 2022 as part of the “Operation Clean Your Frontage Campaign”. The campaign forms part of the “Make Accra Work Again” agenda to ensure compliance to sanitation regulations in the Greater Accra Region, led by the Regional Minister, Henry Quartey.

RCC to enforce campaign

Prior to this directive, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, intimated that the “Operation Clean Your Frontage” campaign will be enforced by the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) to curb the menace of poor environmental sanitation in the Region.

According to the Minister, the ministry was ready and as such will indulge the services of more men and women on the streets to urge people to continue to observe cleanliness in their frontage and their immediate environments.

Henry Quartey, stated the ministry will engage the services of some National Service personnel to assist in the rollout of the ‘Operation Clean Your Frontage’ campaign from February this year.

According to the Minister, the National Service personnel would complement the efforts of various Municipal Environmental Health Officers who would be summoning persons and corporate entities with filthy surroundings.

The National Service Secretariat in response to the demand has issued a directive informing all user agencies to lease service personnel in their institutions to help with the campaign.
