The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has refuted claims that the country and 19 others have been barred from entering the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Shirley Ayorkor Botchway

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration has revealed that no Ghanaian living in Ukraine has died or suffered any serious injury.

Contained in a statement, it indicated that most Ghanaians in Ukraine, including those under siege, have reportedly left to neighbouring countries. The Foreign Affiars Ministry intimated that it has equally doubled its evacuation efforts in the wake of intensified tensions between Ukraine and Russia.

“So far, the Ministry has not been notified of any tragic loss of life or serious injuries to our compatriots… The government of Ghana, through the Honorary Consulate in Hungary, continues to monitor the situation and its redoubling efforts towards completing the evacuation of the remaining batch of students and Ghanaians out there”.

Foreign Affairs Ministry

The ministry noted that the evacuees from Ukraine, have been attended to “by professionals of the Mental Health Authority, who offered psycho-social support to our distressed compatriots”.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration wishes to inform the public that the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals from Ukraine is progressing steadily. To date, the Government of Ghana has been able to evacuate a total of two hundred and twenty-six Ghanaians to Ghana”.

The Ministry thanked all who have been of immense support in the course of the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals stuck in Ukraine. The Government, the ministry emphasized, equally appreciates the efforts of the hard-working members of its diplomatic “Missions in Prague, Berne, the Vatican City, Moscow, Ankara, Vienna, and Berlin, as well as our Honorary Consuls in Hungary, Romania, Poland, Hungary, Slovakia, in the evacuation of Ghanaian nationals”.

“The government of Ghana wishes to seize this opportunity to express its profound gratitude to Governments, international humanitarian organisations, religious bodies, groups, and individuals, notably the National Union of Ghana Students in Ukraine, and neighbouring countries, the church of Pentecost, and the International Organisation for Migration for their support which in diverse culminated the success of this very important national assignment.”

Foreign Affairs Ministry

It will be recalled that since the conflict in Ukraine with Russia, Ghanaian nationals living in Ukraine had been stranded. Some Ghanaian nationals have, however, refused to be evacuated, despite the Government of Ghana’s efforts. The Ministry, however, relayed its disappointment in Ghanaians who have refused to be evacuated back to Ghana following the war, despite efforts by the government to evacuate them.

Following this, the Ministry emphasized that the government will not be blamed if anything happens to them as it is willing to evacuate them, yet, they have refused.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration notes with concern that, against the backdrop of the prevailing situation and notwithstanding the readiness of the government of Ghana to airlift home our compatriots who have fled from the Ukraine crisis, some of them are unwilling to return to Ghana”.
