Nkoranza Shooting: The Time Police Picked Up Suspect Was Illegal- Kwame Jantuah

Develop plan to transform Police image- Mr. Jantuah to IGP

Private legal practitioner, Mr. Kwame Jantuah

Private legal practitioner, Kwame Jantuah, has intimated that the time the Police officers picked up the robbery suspect (now deceased), Albert Donkor, was illegal.

Mr. Jantuah stated that the acceptable time to pick up suspects is during the early hours of the day. He then questioned why the Police picked up the deceased at 2 am midnight instead of day time.

“If you are going to pick anyone it should be 5am. Why did they pick him up at that time? The mother pleaded to go with them but they said no it’s not important and then for three weeks, they hadn’t heard from their son. There are a lot of circumstances that don’t add up.”

Kwame Jantuah

Kwame Jantuah suggested that to fast track investigations, the body of the deceased can aid, especially with the shooting marks and bullets which can be used to detect which gun the shots came from. “Did the bullet come out of the Police gun or the armed robbers gun? That we don’t know.”

Speaking on the rampage by the Nkoranza Youth, Mr. Jantuah averred that recent development shows that the Police still do not know how to handle crowds, looking at similar violent happenings that have already taken place in the country. He questioned why the Police didn’t call for help but handled things their own way.

“At the time, there was tension when the Chief of Nkoranza told the youth to hold on. At that time, if a command center was in place, intelligence would have been gathered and the interventions could have happened quicker than it happened.”

Investigate issue thoroughly

Also commenting on the Nkoranza happenings, the Western Regional Secretary for the NPP, Charles Bissue, joined the calls for the issue to be thoroughly investigated to help bring justice.

Charles Bissue called for an assessment of the officers involved to ascertain the state of their well being prior to the incident. He said: “Even when you’ve sent somebody out there to do a legal job, they or even the people who shot the guy, they might be going through psychological problems. So, the Police must identify them and treat them as well.”

The Western Regional General Secretary urged citizens, especially the people of Nkoranza to trust the Police activities in connection with the incident. He posited that, over the years, the system has been such that the Police is constantly accused of not doing the right thing which he intimated was not the case.

“The Police Service itself has a motto of ‘Service with integrity’; so, if you look at that, it insinuates that they work with integrity and we have to trust them.”

Charles Bissue

Mr. Bissue indicated that the Police Service over the years has been transformed, as such, he lauded the Inspector General of Police for the good work he is doing. He added that with what is going on recently, the IGP has done well in maintaining the integrity of the Police.

“I do not know the facts of the matter but in situations like this when the system is so volatile, I want the police to come out instantaneously and nip things in the bud. If you allow it to go far, then people start feeding it with information and then you lose your integrity.

“With this Nkoranza issue, the Police hasn’t come out with anything concrete. I’ve heard all forms of information saying that the guy was talking about the Police themselves doing something illegal that’s why he was actually killed.”
