Palgrave Boakye-Danquah, Government Spokesperson on governance and security, has stated that, amidst the contrary opinions of most Ghanaians on the poor performance of the finance minister, he thinks that Ken Ofori Attah has done well in his term of office, and he awaits his defense from all the allegations thrown at the finance minister.
He said that the committee has been given seven days to submit a report on the issue, indicating that he keenly awaits the results with hope. He added that it was certain that the budget was going to be read very soon, in order for Ghanaians to know what to look out for in the year 2023.
“I have extreme confidence in the finance minister, I’m very certain that he’ll be able to recover the economy back within the challenges that we have. The finance minister will be able to recover the economy back and the Ghanian people should continually have their trust in him.”
Palgrave Boakye-Danquah
He mentioned that the structure of his party [New Patriotic Party] ensures unity and formidability in the party, and that is good for the party’s democracy. Mr. Danquah also said that some members of the NPP stated that, they did not have any problem with the finance minister and that he did “remarkably well” in his first term, however the hinderances he was facing currently were due to global issues.
Ofori-Attah Resigned From Data Bank Due To His Incompetency
On the same discussion, Governs Kwame Agbodza, MP for the Adaklu Constituency mentioned that, finance minister Ken Ofori-Attah resigned from Data Bank to work in the public sector because he was unable to manage the affairs of the entity.
He indicated that Ofori-Attah is showing that same level of mismanagement with how he is handling the state’s financial affairs. The MP argued that, conflict of interest; one of the allegations that has caused the finance minister’s job to be on the line, cannot be compared to incompetence.
According to the statement made by the MP, this indicated that the position in which the minister finds himself gives him the opportunity to derive personal benefit, and this could not be compared to his inability to efficiently manage the affairs of his business entity and the economy of Ghana as well.
Hon. Agbodza stated that the finance minister should put his hand on his chest and say that he is not a beneficial owner of Data Bank.
“You have a situation where Mr. Ken Ofori-Attah and Mr. Adu- Boahen consistently benefit through entities related to them when they go and borrow. So, they’re binging on borrowing because the more money they borrow the more money they get.”
Governs Kwame Agbodza
He mentioned that, nobody was complaining about other bank owners, because none of these bank owners were part of the government. Hon. Agbodza declared that, the finance minister should not be in charge of the country’s finances and be a beneficiary at the same time, according to the Public Procurement Act.
“It is important for him to disassociate himself. For me I’m happy that the NPP is saying that they are not denying the fact that he is benefiting. They are only saying that, he’s not broken the law. What Ghanaians need to know is that, he’s making millions.”
Governs Kwame Agbodza
He accused the finance minister of excessive borrowing, saying that the more the minister borrows, the more he profits from it personally.
