Stop Giving Mandate To Politicians Who Instigate Violence, It Threatens The Country’s Stability – Kathleen Addy

Kathleen Addy, Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education

Kathleen Addy, the Chairperson of the National Commission for Civic Education has urged Ghanaians to stop giving mandate to politicians who instigate violence both before and during elections.

Speaking during a media briefing to Ghana’s 30 years of constitutional rule, Ms. Addy noted that the gains made to stabilize the country will be eroded if citizens continue to give the mandate to such persons who care less about the peace of the country.

“It is our duty to punish politicians, who employ insults, intimidation and violence in their quest for power and position. Let us deny them what they seek so that they will learn their lesson. From now until December 2024 and beyond, not a single drop of blood should be shed for political gain. No politician and I mean no politician is worth it.”

Ms. Addy

Ms. Addy also mentioned that some threats being advanced towards the country’s democracy such as illegal mining and corruption must be immediately addressed to prevent them from escalating.

“One of the biggest threats we face today, 30 years into the 4th Republic is the increasing monetization of politics resulting in a very expensive and somewhat unattractive democracy. As we all know, Ghana is currently facing a very real existential threat as terrorists are looking to expand to the coastal countries of West Africa.

“Another serious threat to our democracy is the wanting destruction of our environment, primarily through galamsey but also through deforestation. Galamsey will eventually lead to a breakdown of law and order, proliferation of arms and emergence of war-lords and total breakdown of society.”

Ms. Addy’s Encouraging Words To Ghanaians

Madam Addy also encouraged citizens to participate in decision making with reference to the upcoming District Assembly elections.

Later this year, District level elections will be held, the chairperson indicated. Our record is that, on average, participation in district level elections is rather poor with the turnout usually around 30%, Ms. Addy observed.

The records are clear over the years that Ghanaians participate more in presidential elections but attach little importance to district level elections.

With the prevailing report indicating low participation on the part of Ghanaians during district elections, Ms. Addy, beckoned for the full support and participation of the citizenry in the upcoming district elections.

“It is our hope that this time round, Ghanaians will turn out massively to elect assembly members and unit committee members and actively hold them accountable in the period between elections.”

Ms. Addy

Ms. Addy however cautioned Ghanaians against engaging in acts of violence in their turn out and participation in their upcoming elections.

“By all means, actively participate in the election process but do not be lured into illegal activities.”
