Massive celebrations as early results see Liberal Democrats win key councils.

Local Council elections are underway in England, and early results are flowing in, as the Labor and Liberal Democrats gains council seats at the expense of the Conservatives. Labor gained the councils of Plymouth, Medway, and Stoke-on-Trent, while the Lib Dems won Windsor and Maidenhead.

The Conservatives lost their majority in Tamworth, Brentwood, Hertsmere, and North West Leicestershire. Only a small number of councils were counted overnight, and most results will not be confirmed until later on Friday. Polls for almost 8,000 council seats on 230 councils, and four mayors in England ended on Thursday. The election results would be a major test of Rishi Sunak’s electoral popularity since he became prime minister.

Conservatives have expressed dissatisfaction with the early results, but have observed that only 25% of councils have declared results so far. Preliminary results show Labor making steady, if not overwhelming gains, but the party claims it is making strong progress in the areas needed to win the next general election.

In response to the overnight results, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak stated that, the Conservatives were making gains in “key election battlegrounds” such as Peterborough, Sandwell, and Bassetlaw, but stated that “I’m not detecting any massive groundswell of movement towards the Labor Party or excitement for their agenda.”

Labor’s national campaign coordinator, Shabana Mahmood MP, claimed the results showed the party was “on course to form the next administration.” Tonight has been a disaster for Rishi Sunak as voters punished him for the Tories’ failure,” she continued.

Sir Ed Davey, Liberal Democrat Leader, disclosed that, he had a “Cheshire-cat” smile on his face after what he called a “ground-breaking night” for his party. The Green Party hopes to take complete control of its first council in Mid Suffolk. Carla Denyer, the party’s co-leader, said her party was benefiting from “a deep dislike of the Tories and Starmer’s uninspiring Labor.”

The Labor party celebrated other victories, including taking Medway in Kent, which the Conservatives had held for more than 20 years. The Liberal Democrats took control of Windsor and Maidenhead, where their 22-year-old candidate upset the Conservative leader of the council.

Results will be announced throughout Friday, including three mayoral races in Bedford, Leicester, and Mansfield. In Middlesbrough, Labor’s Chris Cooke defeated the incumbent candidate.

Elections will not to be conducted in London, Scotland, or Wales, due to King Charles’ Coronation on Saturday. Council elections in Northern Ireland have been pushed back to Thursday, May 18.

Political Analyst’s Point Of View

“Conclusions drawn must be done so with caution; caution because of the volume of results still to come, and caution because it can be crude to instantly transpose local election results to imagine a general election picture. But there is often a correlation between performance at local elections and national ones,” Chris Mason, a political editor said.

“It has, without question so far, been a miserable series of results for the Conservatives,” he averred. “A wake up call” as one minister put it. “Labor reckon these results show they are on track to win the next general election. But some analysts are skeptical the numbers are that good for labor, given the colossal mountain they face to get Keir Starmer into Downing Street and the Tories take comfort from that,” Mason explained further.

“The broadest sleep-deprived smiles this morning belong to Liberal Democrats. But remember, we are not even close to the half way point in these results so far,” Chris added.
