Former Deputy Minister of Information, Felix Kwakye Ofosu predicts that former Assin North lawmaker Mr. James Gyakye Quayson will triumph in the by-election and win re-election to Parliament.

In a tweet reacting to Mr Gyakye Quayson’s announcement to contest in the Assin North by-election on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mr Kwakye Ofosu said “He is heading straight back to Parliament.”

In a statement Mr. Quasyon said “I know that you, the people of Assin North, are ready for the bye-election.”

“Since last year April, when the Supreme Court stopped me from performing my duties as your representative in Parliament, you have been without representation in the 8th Parliament of the 4th Republic. Like the people of the SALL Traditional Areas who are excluded from representation in this Parliament, you the people of Assin North too have been in that unacceptable situation for over a year.

“The bye-election, which must be held within thirty days of the decision of the Supreme Court, according to the Constitution (Article 112(5)), will bring an end to this situation. The will of the people of Assin North must triumph. Democracy must be restored. I urge you all to come out in your numbers to vote for me so I return to Parliament and continue the work I began to do on your behalf, towards advancing the Assin North development agenda.”

NPP To Emerge Victorious

Richard Ahiagbah, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Director of communications, is confident that his party will win the Assin North by-election.

In response to the Supreme Court’s ruling to invalidate the elections held in Assin North in 2020, the Electoral Commission (EC) has designated June 27 for the election of a parliamentary candidate for the district.

Speaking in an interview, the Director of Communications of the NPP maintained; “Assin North is an interesting seat, it’s alternating back to the NPP, our chances are very bright. If you pay attention to the numbers, we have won with more votes than the National Democratic Congress has ever won. They never crossed anywhere, the last time we won was in 2016 in excess of 56 or 57 percent.”

“So clearly we have a potential to perform better in that constituency. With the work that we have done, come June 27, the NPP will emerge victorious. The dynamics are different, and it has nothing to do with his person [James Gyakey Quayson], whose second coming doesn’t really matter.”

Richard Ahiagbah

He declared unequivocally that on June 7, the NPP would elect a parliamentary candidate for the by-election.

“We opened nominations on Wednesday for all who are interested in contesting for that seat to present themselves to our party delegates who will choose which one will be fit to represent us. My last checks suggest that two people have picked nominations forms so far. We will do the vetting in the cause of the week and elections will be held on June 7 to select the parliamentary candidate for Assin North.”
