President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang joined the family of the late Ambassador James Victor Gbeho, members of the diplomatic corps, government officials and other mourners at a state funeral held in his honour on July 31, 2026, in Accra.

President Mahama’s tribute, delivered through Presidential Aide Joyce Bawah Mogtari, described Gbeho as a “rare nation builder” whose decades of service significantly elevated Ghana’s global standing.

The funeral service honoured Ambassador Gbeho’s legacy across Ghana’s foreign policy, diplomacy and national development, drawing together dignitaries who gathered to pay their final respects to the veteran statesman.

President Mahama used the occasion to extend official condolences on behalf of the nation, acknowledging the depth of Gbeho’s contribution to Ghana over the course of his career.

Service Described as a Sacred Trust

In his tribute, President Mahama characterised Gbeho’s decades of diplomatic work as more than a career, framing it instead as a solemn obligation carried out with consistent professionalism and dedication to country.

According to the highlights of the speech, President Mahama described Gbeho’s service as a “sacred trust,” noting his profound professionalism, patriotism, and quiet confidence throughout his years in public life.

President Mahama placed particular emphasis on the personal character that defined Gbeho’s approach to diplomacy, arguing that his integrity became inseparable from how Ghana was perceived internationally during his years of service.

The President remarked that Gbeho’s legacy is the immense respect he brought to Ghana on the global stage, a reputation built not through force of personality alone but through sustained ethical conduct in every role he held.

Thoughtful, Firm and Humble

President Mahama offered a detailed characterisation of Gbeho’s diplomatic temperament, describing a leader whose approach balanced conviction with restraint in ways that distinguished him among his peers.

This description points to a diplomat capable of navigating sensitive international negotiations without sacrificing either decisiveness or the collaborative spirit often required in multilateral diplomacy.

Five Decades Across Ghana’s Diplomatic History

President Mahama’s tribute traced the extensive arc of Gbeho’s career, which spanned more than five decades and touched some of the most significant diplomatic postings in Ghana’s history.

He served as Ghana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations between 1980 and 1990, a decade-long tenure that placed him at the centre of Ghana’s engagement with the international community during a formative period for the country’s foreign relations.

Beyond his UN posting, Gbeho took on roles as a UN mediator in Somalia, contributing to international peace efforts in a region that has long presented complex diplomatic challenges.

He also served as ECOWAS Special Representative for Liberia, a position that placed him directly within regional peace and stability efforts across West Africa during periods of significant political upheaval.

His career culminated in his appointment as Minister for Foreign Affairs, a role that allowed him to shape Ghana’s diplomatic priorities at the highest level of government, drawing on decades of accumulated international experience.

An Enduring Inspiration for Future Diplomats

President Mahama closed his tribute by positioning Gbeho’s life and career as a model for those who follow in his footsteps within Ghana’s diplomatic and public service institutions.

He concluded that Gbeho’s life of integrity serves as an enduring inspiration for future diplomats and public servants, framing his legacy not merely as a historical record but as an active standard against which future generations of Ghanaian diplomats might measure their own conduct and achievements.

The scale and composition of the funeral service, drawing the President, Vice President, diplomatic corps representatives and senior government officials, reflected the significance Ghana’s political leadership attached to honouring Gbeho’s contributions.

His decades of service across some of the most demanding diplomatic postings available to a Ghanaian official positioned him as a defining figure in the country’s foreign policy history, particularly during the early decades following independence when Ghana worked to establish its voice within international institutions such as the United Nations.

A Legacy That Shaped Ghana’s Global Standing

As mourners gathered to bid farewell to Ambassador Gbeho, the tributes delivered throughout the ceremony underscored a broader narrative about the role individual diplomats play in shaping how a nation is perceived on the world stage.

Gbeho’s extended tenure at the United Nations, coupled with his subsequent mediation and regional representative roles, offered a template for sustained, principled engagement in international affairs, one that President Mahama’s tribute suggested continues to hold relevance for Ghana’s diplomatic corps and public servants navigating the complexities of contemporary international relations.
