Ghana’s multi-hit and iconic star, Skrewfaze

Ghana’s multi-hit and iconic star Skrewfaze has revealed that he started doing music in the early days of 2006.

He recounted the artists he met when he started doing Ga music who were the likes of Adane Best, Kasim, Tinny, and King David, among others.

He further stated that these Ga musicians were his seniors when it came to doing Ga songs. “Ga music is all rhythms”, Skrewfaze said, adding that Ga songs are a combination of rhythms and have life impacts.

He revealed that Francophone songs sound just like Ga songs, citing an example of a song like ‘Gbalgazaa’ and ‘Zoplezo’.

“I listened to the song ‘Zoplezo’ and I said to myself this is in line with the language Ga so why don’t I interlace the language I speak [Ga] with the same rhythm as the Francophones and it synchronized fortunately. So when it comes to Ga songs, it’s all about Rhythms…”.

He further revealed that there’s a Ga feeling when one listens to most Nigerian songs because it sounds great.

Pushing yourself as an artist

Skrewfaze disclosed that artists should try as much as they can to push themselves into making music.

The iconic star advised that artists should make an effort to put their songs out there to reach their target audience.

He recounted how he wrote the song ‘Gbalagazaa’ by himself and recorded it five consecutive times.

“I still pushed the song ‘Gbalagazaa’ when it was released. At that time in 2009, I paid almost GHC300 for 5 consecutive times. I put in that effort. Ga music can’t be pushed far, but one thing I know is that once you’re determined to do something and you put in your effort, it becomes successful. This is you. This is your craft. This is what you do. Don’t limit yourself to what you do”.

Skrewfaze

He further noted that he is his own fan and loves his craft if no one loves it.

Skrewfaze recalled that the song ‘Gbalagazaa’ pushed him to have his first show in Equatorial Guinea. “President Theodore Nguema and his son were celebrating their birthday together”, he said, adding that he had the chance to perform with legendary musicians.

He disclosed that since Ga music can’t go beyond its reach, one should push himself or herself when support is available. “Language shouldn’t be a barrier”, he said.

The hitmaker recounted a common legendary song he recently watched on YouTube that was normally sang according to the rhythm but was sang with different lyrics.

“Look at our very own Wiyaala, she is going far despite the language barrier. We are trying to show or portray our culture to the outside world. It doesn’t matter. You just need to believe in what you’re doing. Language shouldn’t be a barrier. That’s why it’s okay to mix the languages so that people can relate to the song. Subtitles are also added to get people to understand the meaning of the song”.

Skrewfaze

He revealed that Ga artists are not united and advised they should put away conflicts and support each other in order to push Ga musicians to the forefront.

“If Ga songs can get to the top, we have to start from the grassroots. Let’s be united”, Skrewfaze said.

“When celebrating the ‘Chale Wote Festival’, Jamestown, people from all walks of life come to celebrate with us. That’s why I am saying that all Ga artists should come together. We have every right to organize shows and travel to perform at places for incomes”.

Skrewfaze

He mentioned the names of some Ga artists like Nii Funny, Luther, Tinny, King Jerry, Adane Best, and Gasmilla, among others, adding that there will be a change in how Ga songs travel should they work together as a family.
