Okudzeto Ablakwa Chastises BOG For Spending GHS 711.21M During Crisis

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has chastised the Bank of Ghana for spending over GHS711.21million in its crisis year.

According to the legislator, the expenditure of the Bank of Ghana in the period where the central bank made a whopping losses of over 60.8billion including the construction of its new headquarters and a guest house facility in Tamale in the Northern Region of Ghana is unconscionable.

“Thanks to independent auditors at Deloitte, we now know from page 86 of the Bank of Ghana’s 2022 Annual Report and Financial Statements that the Bank of Ghana made a staggering GHS711.21million expenditure commitment in its crisis year of 2022 on reckless projects such as its scandalous new head office, remodeling of regional offices and construction of a guest house in Tamale”.

The Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament indicated that if not for the independent auditing of Deloitte, the Bank of Ghana would have concealed such expenditure from the public.

“What is equally disgraceful and condemnable was BoG’s attempt to conceal these risky humongous transactions by its disingenuous refusal to disclose them in its original financial statement presented to auditors. Regrettably, the auditors had to make their own discover”.

Ablakwa Calls On BOG To Ensure Accountability

The Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa who has been known for his revealing investigations against several state institutions including the Office of the President expressed his dismay at the happening at the Bank of Ghana.

He wondered why the central bank would even consider hiding such expenditure from the public.

“If the Bank of Ghana had nothing to hide and was really proud of its sleazy new headquarters project and all the other dubious constructions, why did they deploy such elaborate opaque concealment schemes just to avoid accountability? Is this the nation-wrecking conduct Ken Ofori-Atta is asking Ghanaians to support?”

Mr. Ablakwa recounted that the GHS711.21million can do a lot for the many struggling Ghanaians who have been forced to accept financial haircuts by the same cabal who has destroyed the Ghanaian economy.

He stressed that the leadership of the Bank of Ghana would be subject to strict accountability if there is a change of government.

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu Constituency, Honorable Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has earlier requested information on the transaction and engagements between the Bank of Ghana and Marine Metro Development Limited from the Bank of Ghana.

The Ranking Member of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Parliament made the request under the Right to Information Act, 2019 (ACT989) and Article 21(1) (f) of the 1992 Constitution of Ghana.

In a statement released by the legislator, he emphasized that the request is in line with his constitutional mandate of parliamentary oversight.

He believes matters about the transactions and engagements between the Bank of Ghana and a company which was incorporated on 21st April 2020 known as Marine Metro Development Limited must be of grave concern to every well-meaning Ghanaian.
