Ghana Federation of Labour Calls On Gov’t To Address Issues Of Governance

General Secretary of Ghana Federation of Labour, Abraham Coomson.

The Ghana Federation of Labour has called on government to address challenges in the country and issues of governance.

According to the group, Ghana, a country with immense potential and a rich history, is facing numerous challenges due to ineffective governance.

It revealed that the youth, who represent a significant portion of the population, are directly affected by these issues and are determined to demand accountability and positive change.

Furthermore, the Federation stated that the recent protest by Democracy Hub dubbed: ‘Occupy JulorbiHouse’, comprising passionate and concerned Ghanaian youth, has equally expressed its deep dissatisfaction with the state of governance in a 3-day demonstration staged in Accra.

“As representatives of the labour unions in Ghana, we believe it is our duty to stand up and speak out against the issues that hinder the progress and development of our beloved nation.”

Contained in a statement signed by Abraham Coomson, General Secretary of Ghana Federation of Labour, it noted that one of the primary concerns the country is bedeviled with is the rampant corruption that plagues the society.

It explained that corruption not only drains the country’s resources but also undermines the trust and confidence of the people in the government.

“We firmly believe that a transparent and accountable government is essential for the sustainable growth and prosperity of our nation.”

Addressing issues of unemployment

Furthermore, the group expressed profound disappointment over the lack of opportunities and high levels of unemployment that hinder the potential of this generation.

Despite their education and skills, it highlighted that many of them are unable to find meaningful employment or start their own businesses due to a lack of support and an unfavorable economic environment.

“We urge the government to prioritize job creation and provide the necessary infrastructure and policies to foster opportunities for these millennials.”

Elaborating on the challenges in the country, the Federation emphasized another pressing issue which has to do with the inadequate provision of basic services such as healthcare, education, and infrastructure.

To this, it underscored that the youth deserve access to quality healthcare, affordable education, and well-maintained infrastructure that can support their aspirations and enable them to contribute to the nation’s progress.

“It is disheartening to see these essential services neglected, leaving them and all of us as Ghanaians, to bear the brunt of their absence.”

Ghana Federation of Labour

In the spirit of constructive engagement, the Ghana Federation of Labour expressed its willingness to collaborate with the government, civil society organizations, and other stakeholders to find sustainable solutions.

It reckoned that by working together, all and sundry can overcome the challenges and build a brighter future for the youth in Ghana.

“Our federation is committed to joining these young people in this movement for change. Together, let us raise our voices, demand accountability, and work towards a better Ghana for ourselves and future generations.”

Meanwhile, the convener of the Democracy Hub, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has been sued by Minister of National Security, Albert Kan-Dapaah, over an attempted bribery allegation made against the minister.

Mr Barker-Vormawor in an interaction with the media on the sidelines of the Occupy JulorbiHouse protest alleged that at a meeting between him and the National Security Minister, Albert Kan-Dapaah, he was offered $1 million by the Minister in an attempt to get him to stop his activism.

However, in the writ of summons filed by Mr Kan-Dapaah’s lawyers, the national security minister is seeking a declaration that the words uttered by the Barker-Vormawor are Defamatory of the Plaintiff.
