NDC Urged To Probe Energy Issues In Parliament

Nana Akomea

Nana Akomea, Chief Executive of State Transport Company, has urged the National Democratic Congress caucus in parliament to probe energy issues in parliament.

He argues that the platform better serves the interest of the public.

According to him, mere accusations and discussions of the issues do not solve the challenges facing the country.

“Insider dealings with some companies, if those in political opposition have some information to the extent that there is some impropriety, major impropriety going on in the energy delivery system and there are companies who are having “sweeter deals”, they have a responsibility that these issues are brought to a platform where they can be properly addressed.

“Activate parliament, because now you have the power and the opportunity in parliament. So if you’re in opposition and you believe there are some sweet dealings, some mascaraed companies have been set up and they are getting all kinds of deals, that they should be getting, then you provide names. Activate parliament, because now you have the power and the opportunity in parliament.”

Nana Akomea

“If I were in your shoes, I would activate it because beyond embarrassing the government which is your chief aim, you also want to serve the public interest”, he stressed.

Nana Akomea further stated that the two political parties must refrain from mere argument and more to getting issues of corruption particularly resolved.

“I have already told you that we have to move away from the crossfire that we do because it doesn’t serve the interest of the public. Just this week, a professor made a statement about road contracts and he said that before you get a contract, he demands a million cedis from you; this crossfire.

“Happily for me, the ministry involved has taken the issue to EOCO so that proper evidence can be adduced and the public interest will be served. Because clearly, it is not in the public interest that these things will go on. “

Nana Akomea

He thus praised the Ministry of Roads and Highways for forwarding accusations of shady deals in the ministry to EOCO for further investigations.

“And if the allegation is made by a highly respected member of society like the professor, we should not just take it as a fusion. So the minister has gone to a platform where both the minister and the professor can go to serve the interest of the public.”

Nana Akomea

He emphasized further that he hopes that the crossfire between NPP and NDC comes to that scrutiny and does remain at that level of crossfire.

Pricing Of Tariffs

Addressing the energy challenges in the country, Nana Akomea explained the need to go past the political difficulty in pricing the services due to the high cost involved in production.

“There may be political difficulty in getting the price right. If you let the political difficulty stand in your way, then you are postponing the showdown. That’s what you’re doing, so you have to get the price right. In getting the price right, you have to look at the things that make the price change, the things that make the cost of electricity change, and deal with those issues; the biggest of all which I think is the value of the cedi.”

“Because all the component that goes into the cost of electricity are imported, they are bought with dollars. So if we don’t find a mechanism or an economic paradigm that will keep our currency stable, it will increase the cost of electricity.”

Nana Akomea

He espoused that the wrong pricing over the years has led to debt pilling.

According to him while inefficiencies played a major role in the current difficulties, the pricing changes because the dollar changes were more significant causative. Hence he entreated that the country must adopt an economic paradigm that stabilizes the cedi to resolve the energy issues over time.
