I Started My Studio In My Mother’s Kitchen – Kwami Eugene

Ghanaian artist, Kwami Eugene

Ghanaian High-life and Afrobeat singer-songwriter, Kwami Eugene has disclosed that at age 17, he started his studio in his mother’s kitchen.

Sharing his journey as a teenager to stardom, he asserted that at age 17, he had the dream and knew that he would be rich, adding that he was recording songs for Luther and producing and writing songs for some Gospel musicians.

“So I started my studio in my mom’s kitchen. So, she had to move from the kitchen and start cooking outside and I started using the kitchen as a studio. My mom loves me that much, so if I need the kitchen, take it. I woke up very early in the morning and there was this container that brought foreign goods and was cheap,” Kwami Eugene said.

“I couldn’t afford these big speakers, so I saved to get some amplifiers and added others and I created a small studio… People started coming in and I did something for some woman somewhere, she’s a gospel artist and she played it for them to listen,” he further stated.

Kwami Eugene further revealed that after the gospel artist played the demo he did for the woman, it opened doors for him because he had people to work with, adding that it helped him meet Luther for the first time.

He disclosed that his mother suggested that he should try and participate in the MTN hitmaker.

The ‘Monica’ hitmaker revealed that he met Richie of Lynx Entertainment through Gunshot, an artist. “I followed Gunshot once to Lynx Entertainment and that was the first time I met Richie Mensah. So what happened was that I had Gunshots song that I produced the beat… So when Richie was working on it, I was introduced to him and he suggested that I should join MTN hitmaker,” he said.

Kwami Eugene disclosed that a year after he heeded Richie Mensah’s advice and joined the contest, adding that he knew he would be where he is now.

Opening Up On Differences With Some Artists

Kwami Eugene opened up on how he got hurt by the gestures of Joshua of Keche’s handling of things poorly.

He disclosed that he wrote the hook and the chorus of the song he has with Keche but he didn’t like how Joshua handled things with him.

“It’s gestures. It’s not what he said… making it look like I didn’t help. It hurts when you don’t sleep and someone knocks on your door at 3:00 am and both of us… I open my door and we make it happen and now the gestures make it look like they did everything by themselves,” he said.

“One of Adina’s biggest songs, I wrote it, I never took any shine away and she’s still enjoying till now. Shout out to Adina, big love,” he further added.

Also, Kwami Eugene spoke about helping Okyeame Kwame with a song and he is grateful to him because he believes that Okyeame Kwame appreciated his effort.

He revealed that the royalty issue he had with Keche similarly happened with Mr. Drew but he involved a lawyer in Mr. Drew’s case because he got into the limelight before Mr. Drew and could handle him how he wanted to while Keche got in the limelight before him [Kwami Eugene], so he decided to leave them, adding that it is a stressful process.

The High-Life artist disclosed that it won’t be bad if he wins the Songwriter of the Year.

He asserted that he loves writing songs more than singing and producing songs.

Stating the reason he thinks he has not won the best Songwriter of the Year, he revealed that he thinks it’s the algorithm, adding that the mindset also adds up.
