The funeral arrangements of the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba have taken an unexpected turn as the Accra High Court has issued an injunction stopping his burial.
The burial of Daddy Lumba, which was originally scheduled for this weekend in the Ashanti region, has been put on hold following the court’s ruling. According to the documents presented before the court, the maternal relatives contended that they had not been adequately consulted in the planning process.
The ruling followed a suit filed by members of the musician’s maternal family, who argued that they had been sidelined in key decisions regarding the funeral. The injunction, which has temporarily halted all burial plans, has sparked intense public interest and social media reactions, especially on X, where fans continue to debate the unfolding developments.

The court, after reviewing affidavits from both parties, found enough evidence to support the claim that the immediate family was being excluded. In its decision, the High Court stated that it was necessary to assess the full merits of the case before allowing any burial arrangements to proceed. While acknowledging that postponing the funeral could increase expenses for all parties involved, the court stressed that proper due process must be followed and that all relevant family members must be included.
Authority of Family Head Must Reflect Consultation
The ruling also touched on the traditional leadership structure in many Akan families. Although the court affirmed that the family head, known as the Abusuapanyin, has the authority to coordinate the funeral rites, it added that this authority is not absolute. It must be exercised in consultation with the immediate family, which includes maternal relatives.
The first respondent in the case, Kofi Owusu, who serves as the family head, was specifically restrained from proceeding with the burial until proper engagement with all stakeholders takes place.
The court emphasised that family unity and cultural balance must guide the process, especially considering the prominence of Akan customs that place significant responsibility on the maternal lineage in burial matters.
Funeral Home Barred from Releasing the Body
As part of the court’s decision, Transitions Funeral Home, the third respondent, was instructed not to release Daddy Lumba’s body until the case is fully resolved. This directive ensures that no party can proceed independently with the burial without a clear and collectively approved plan
The funeral home is therefore legally bound to hold onto the body until further notice from the court. This measure has effectively frozen all funeral-related activities, pending the conclusion of proceedings and agreement among the family members.
In its bid to restore order and promote cooperation, the court directed the first respondent to convene a stakeholder meeting within three weeks. The aim is to bring all parties together to deliberate and agree on a new burial date. This meeting is expected to serve as a platform for resolving the disagreements that have deepened since the musician’s passing on July 26, 2025.
Additionally, the court ordered that all funds raised for the funeral be separated from accounts belonging to the Daddy Lumba Memorial Foundation. This directive was issued to ensure transparency and proper financial management. The applicants were further instructed to file an affidavit with the registrar of the court to document the progress of these directives.
The tension surrounding the funeral arrangements stems from longstanding Akan customs that give maternal relatives substantial authority during funerals. In many Ghanaian communities, especially among the Akan, the maternal family is traditionally responsible for the burial rites, regardless of the deceased’s marital status or nuclear family structure.
Daddy Lumba’s death has not only brought grief to his fans and family but also reignited conversations about cultural practices and the need for clarity in funeral leadership. The dispute reflects broader societal questions about how tradition, modernity and family dynamics intersect in moments of loss.
Fans React as Case Gains National Attention
Since the ruling became public, fans of the highlife icon have taken to social media to express their thoughts. Many expressed disappointment that internal family conflict is delaying the final rites of a national treasure, while others supported the court’s decision to ensure that all parties are properly represented. The DaddyLumbaFuneral trended on X as Ghanaians shared their views and expectations.

It’s shameful how a legend has been treated
RIP DADDY LUMBA
I haven’t followed the Daddy Lumba issue but what the family is doing to him is disgraceful and embarrassing. If the dead had powers, he would have cursed them from the ‘grave’.

Lowkey, Daddy Lumba is the villain in all of this. He could have married just one woman to prevent all this drama!

His biggest mistake was dying when he had not put his home together. He has himself to blame! Not a legend in my books! https://t.co/3cLZYywcDq
