The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has intensified efforts to expand international partnerships and strengthen its technical and operational capacity following a high-level engagement at the Offshore Technology Conference (OTC) Brasil in Rio de Janeiro.
The conference, one of the world’s premier platforms for offshore technology and energy innovation brought together more than 23,000 participants from 53 countries, offering a strategic opportunity for GNPC to advance its upstream investment agenda.
Led by Board Chairman Professor Joseph Oten-Adjei, the GNPC delegation included senior executives such as Acting CEO Kwame Ntow Amoah and Deputy Chief Executive for Exploration and Production, Michael Aryeetey.
Their participation formed part of Ghana’s broader strategy to strengthen technical cooperation, attract new investment, and reinforce the country’s ambition to build a globally competitive national oil company.
According to Acting CEO Kwame Ntow Amoah, GNPC used the event to outline a detailed upstream growth strategy, focusing on the corporation’s subsidiarization plan and short-term operational priorities across both onshore and offshore projects.
“[This] engagement is a critical pillar in building strong international partnerships, deep technical expertise, and sustainable growth for Ghana’s upstream sector.”

High-Level Talks with Petrobras

The most significant highlight of GNPC’s participation was a series of strategic meetings with the leadership of Petrobras, Brazil’s national oil company and a global powerhouse in deepwater exploration.
GNPC held two rounds of discussions with Petrobras President and CEO Magda Chambriard and her executive team, focusing on collaboration in exploration, technology transfer, research and development, and capacity building for Ghanaian engineers.
Petrobras expressed strong interest in several potential partnerships, including joint evaluation of green offshore blocks, participation in farm-in negotiations for existing fields, and joint venture opportunities within the Voltaian Basin, one of Ghana’s most important frontier onshore prospects.
Executives from Petrobras also indicated readiness to “support GNPC with knowledge-sharing in deepwater technology and low-carbon exploration methods.”
Mr. Aryeetey extended a formal invitation for Petrobras to visit GNPC’s data room in Accra to conduct a detailed technical review. Petrobras welcomed the invitation and expressed eagerness to accelerate the next phase of discussions. Their visit is expected early next year.

Another milestone of the Brazil engagement was GNPC’s technical tour of CENPES, Petrobras’ globally acclaimed Research and Development Centre.
The facility is recognized for innovations in deepwater drilling, machine learning applications in reservoir modeling, and environmentally efficient production systems.
During the tour, GNPC executives explored opportunities for technical collaboration in geoscience, reservoir engineering, subsea technology, and well engineering.
Discussions also covered the potential for seconding GNPC engineers and researchers to Brazil for advanced training, an initiative that aligns with Ghana’s long-term operatorship ambitions.
GNPC emphasized that access to world-class training remains essential for building national capacity. By leveraging Petrobras’ decades of deepwater experience, Ghana aims to cultivate a new generation of highly skilled petroleum professionals.
Advancing Ghana’s Operatorship Vision

GNPC’s engagement at OTC Brasil forms part of its broader mission to position itself as a capable and competitive upstream operator.
Building on its earlier participation at OTC Houston, the corporation is actively pursuing partnerships that will help it acquire the technology, operational discipline, and investment networks necessary to drive upstream growth.
According to the corporation, the deepening relationship with Petrobras represents a major boost to Ghana’s petroleum aspirations. It also strengthens Ghana’s attractiveness as an exploration destination at a time when global energy investment is increasingly competitive.
Petrobras confirmed its acceptance of GNPC’s invitation to Accra, setting the stage for detailed technical evaluations of both offshore and onshore prospects.
The collaboration is expected to unlock long-term mutual value while enabling GNPC to build a stronger foundation for sustainable operatorship.
GNPC’s participation at OTC Brasil underscores its commitment to strengthening technical capacity and forging partnerships that support Ghana’s long-term energy security.
The corporation believes that expanding such international cooperation will be essential as Ghana deepens its upstream activities and navigates the evolving global energy landscape.
Ultimately, the engagements in Rio de Janeiro demonstrate GNPC’s proactive approach to building a resilient national energy sector, one equipped to compete in a technologically demanding global market.
