The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has condemned the physical attack on Hajia Shamima Yakubu, the Northern Regional Treasurer of the party.

In a statement issued by the General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey on Monday January 15, the leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress considered the assault on Madam Hajia Shamima Yakubu with utmost seriousness, highlighting its commitment to upholding the principles of non-violence within the party.

According to Mr Kwetey, the incident will be thoroughly addressed at the next Functional Executive Committee meeting of the party to send a clear message that the party does not endorse any form of unlawful assault against its officials.

“The leadership of the National Democratic Congress has learnt with shock and disappointment, reports of a physical attack on the person of Hajia Shamima Yakubu, the Northern Regional Treasurer of the party, by a regional party officer. The party condemns in the strongest possible terms this assault on a party official, resulting in her treatment at a hospital”.

Contrary to reports, Mr Kwetey clarified that the incident did not occur in the presence of any national executive member of the National Democratic Congress.

According to Mr Kwetey, there was no national executive member present during the meeting where the assault on the Regional Treasurer took place.

He posited that the meeting was convened to discuss campaign strategy and was unrelated to matters of reconciliation, accounts, or any allied issues.

Furthermore, the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress conveyed the party’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that all party members adhere strictly to the established principles that have characterized it internal politics since its formation in the 1992.

Mr Kwetey asserted that such principles of the National Democratic Congress have been a source of confidence for millions of Ghanaians, reinforcing the party’s position as the next government in waiting.

According to him, the opposition party remains dedicated to fostering an environment of respect and adherence to democratic practices, firmly denouncing any actions that deviate from these principles.

“The NDC wants to place on record its determination to ensure that all its members adhere strictly to the long cherished practices that have made our internal politics the enviable attraction of teeming millions of the people of Ghana, and from which we draw the confidence of being the next government in waiting”.
