Afrobeats has steadily risen since the 2000s when superstars like 2Baba, D’banj, and P-Square enjoyed international success.

Davido gave credit to the early generation of Afrobeat stars for their sacrifice.

Davido stated that while seemingly having to start afresh was difficult, he understood that he and his generation were benefitting from the sacrifices of Afrobeats pacesetters like 2Baba, D’banj, and P-Square, adding that the sacrifices he made would also benefit the future generation.

“What them 2Face, D’banj, and P-Square sacrificed for us is what we are enjoying now. What we are sacrificing now is for the next generation to come and be bigger because the music is only going to grow bigger,” he said.

Davido while speaking on his early days with Sony Music after getting signed in 2016 described it as a difficult period where he had to prove himself to an international market who weren’t familiar with his African exploits.

“When we come to sign record deals overseas, they don’t know we are superstars back home. When I signed my first deal, I just did a 60,000-capacity stadium in Mali. So when you signed a new deal, they’re asking you ‘What’s your name? What type of music do you make?’ I looked at my manager and told him, ‘I’m not starting again’.”

He revealed that they put him with the best producers when he got signed to Sony Music record label.

“So when I first came, they put me up with some producers but it didn’t work out. We dropped the EP on Sony, my first project. failure, failure. To my standard, some people may see it as a success but to my standard that wasn’t it,” he noted.

Davido disclosed that he returned to Nigeria after his first project didn’t go as expected and flew his producers to Sony Music, adding that they came up with one of the best hits which made waves.

Grammy-nominated superstar Davido is among the superstars who continue to acknowledge the impact of the early generation of Afrobeats stars whose efforts contributed to the commercialization of Nigerian mainstream music.

Award-winning Nigerian singer David Adeleke, known by the stage name Davido, revealed a heartwarming detail about his relationship with his wife, Chioma Rowland.

Davido disclosed that he met Chioma before achieving his current level of fame and fortune. He expressed his appreciation for finding love during his early career, acknowledging the challenges of navigating relationships in the spotlight.

“I have a very rich friend who is single, whenever I’m on the phone with my wife, he would be like he has everything in this world but this is what he is missing. I met my wife before I had money. But I was telling myself if I didn’t meet her before then and now I am single, and I meet a girl, it wouldn’t be the same. I would feel the lady is talking to me because I am Davido and I have money.”

The Afrobeats star emphasized that he believes true success extends beyond personal achievements. He values surrounding himself with those who supported him during his rise to stardom.

“My own success is when I see people around who were there when I had nothing and they see me now, that’s the feeling, not like when you blow up and start hanging out with a new set of people. You need to keep the people that were there with you since grinding,” he said.
