NDC’s General Secretary Chides NAPO Over “Produce Your Timetable” Comment

Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, Energy Minister

The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey has strongly criticized the Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh following the latter’s remarks calling on Ghanaians who are demanding a timetable for the recent power outages to produce it for themselves.

Mr Kwetey, while expressing deep concerns and disappointment over the Energy Minister’s utterances, further described it as insensitive and indicative of a disconnect between those in authority and the daily realities faced by the Ghanaian people.

The former Member of Parliament for Ketu South in the Volta Region further bemoaned the plight of ordinary Ghanaians who bear the brunt of the ongoing power crisis in the country in addition to the worsening economic conditions.

“It is profoundly unfortunate to hear such remarks from the very minister responsible for maintaining stable electricity in Ghana.

“It’s troubling that Ghanaians are subjected to significant economic hardships, exacerbated by the persistent issue of Dumsor, while those in authority appear to only deepen these difficulties with their insensitivity and arrogant display of power”.

Furthermore, Honorable Fifi Fiavi Kwetey strongly criticized the ruling government’s handling of the ongoing power crisis in the country and emphasized the need for genuine leadership that prioritizes the well-being of the people and takes concrete steps to alleviate their suffering.

He asserted that leadership should be synonymous with service, marked by humility and a deep-seated concern for the welfare of the citizenry.

Mr Kwetey, while lamenting over similar regrettable comments made by some leading members of the ruling New Patriotic Party administration including President Akufo-Addo, called for the need for political leaders and public officers to eschew any habit that portrays arrogance or a display of power.

He also noted that the growing dissatisfaction with the Energy Minister’s remarks from many well-meaning Ghanaians must serve as a message to the ruling government to take immediate measures to effectively address the underlying issues causing the power outages across the country in recent times.

ECG Unlikely to Comply with PURC Directives

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Bongo Constituency and Member of the Parliament’s Committee on Mines and Energy, and Poverty Reduction, Edward Abambire Bawa has expressed doubt about the likelihood for the Electricity Company of Ghana to comply with the Public Utility Commission’s directive to produce timetable for the ongoing power crisis.

Mr Bawa, while expressing deep concerns over the ongoing power crisis in the country, also bemoaned what he described as the continuous display of disrespect to authority by the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana.

He accused the leadership of the Electricity Company of Ghana led by its Board Chairman Keli Gadzekpo and the Chief Executive Officer, Dubik Mahama for refusing to comply with Parliament’s Mines and Energy, and Poverty Reduction Committee invitation to answer question.

The Minister of Energy, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh had earlier dismissed calls from a wider section of Ghanaians for the Electricity Company of Ghana and the government to produce timetable for the load shedding for the ongoing power crisis.

The Minister’s comment have sparked outrage among citizens who are already grappling with significant economic hardships which has been exacerbated by the recent power outages.

It is important to state that the ongoing electricity crisis in the country, popularly referred as “Dumsor,” is having severe disruptions in the daily life of several citizens, particularly urban settlers and businesses.

Despite government assurances and efforts to address the issue, the power outages continue to persist, leading to frustration and anger among the population.
