Fifi Kwetey Touts Mahama’s Vision to Empower Communities

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC's General Secretary

In a recent address, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, the General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), outlined the vision and key policy proposals of the party’s flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama. These proposals, focusing on decentralization, local governance, and sanitation, aim to empower communities to tackle their challenges.

At the heart of the NDC’s vision is the emphasis on decentralization and local governance. Kwetey highlighted that the party believes in empowering local communities to manage their affairs more effectively. This approach is seen as a way to reduce the gap between the central government and the grassroots, allowing for more responsive and accountable governance.

“Decentralization is not just about transferring power from the center to the peripheries; it’s about empowering communities to take control of their destinies. It’s about creating a space where local leaders can make decisions that are responsive to the needs of their communities. It’s about building a Ghana where every citizen feels a sense of ownership and pride in their community and their nation.”

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC’s General Secretary

The NDC proposes to strengthen the capacity of local councils and assemblies, ensuring they have the necessary resources and training to deliver services efficiently. This includes improving access to education, healthcare, and infrastructure development at the local level.

Addressing sanitation is another key area of focus. Mr. Kwetey noted that the NDC is committed to improving sanitation services in communities across the country. The party believes that access to clean water and sanitation facilities is a fundamental right that should be accessible to all.

The NDC’s proposal includes the development of a comprehensive sanitation strategy that includes the construction of new facilities, the improvement of existing ones, and the provision of clean water sources. This strategy aims to not only improve the health of communities but also to create jobs and stimulate economic growth.

Fifi Kwetey said, “Under HE John Mahama’s leadership, initiatives like Sanitation Day and the eco-friendly Liquid Waste Treatment Plant in Legon, Accra, showcase Ghana’s commitment to sustainability and public health.”

According to Fifi Kwetey, the NDC’s vision for decentralization, local governance, and sanitation is underpinned by the belief that empowering communities is crucial for sustainable development. By giving local communities more control over their affairs, the party aims to foster a sense of ownership and responsibility among residents.

Fifi Kwetey also indicated that HE John Mahama procured heavy-duty equipment including 20 pay loaders, 20 tipper trucks, 60 graders, 10 excavators, and 5 bulldozers aimed at clearing garbage heaps and desilting major drains, alongside road repairs and maintenance. The procurement Improved waste management through effective equipment utilization minimized garbage accumulation, and mitigating flood risks, and related disasters in communities.

Mr. Kwetey emphasized that the NDC is committed to creating an environment where communities can thrive. This includes providing opportunities for economic development, ensuring access to quality education, and improving the living conditions of residents.

“Furthermore, the establishment of automated customer service centers by the Lands Commission in various cities streamlines processes and enhances service delivery. Additionally, the implementation of the Street Naming and Property Address System (SNAPS) project under the Mills-Mahama administration improves infrastructure and navigation nationwide.”

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, NDC’s General Secretary

Fifi Fiavi Kwetey’s outlining of the NDC’s vision and policy proposals marks a significant step towards addressing the challenges faced by communities in Ghana. As the party moves forward, it will be interesting to see how these proposals are implemented and the impact they have on the lives of Ghanaians. The NDC’s commitment to community empowerment and sustainable development is a promising direction for the future of Ghana.
