Creative Industry Urged To Preserve Legacies Of Veteran Artists

Nana Acheampong

Honoring music legends by naming streets, roundabouts, and museums is a wonderful way to pay tribute to their contributions and preserve their legacy.

Many cities already have streets and landmarks named after famous musicians, and it is a great way to celebrate their influence on music and culture.

When considering naming a street or roundabout, it’s important to select a location that has a connection to the musician or their music. For example, if the musician was born or raised in a particular city, naming a street in their honor in that area would be fitting.

Alternatively, if they had a significant impact on a specific neighborhood or community, naming a roundabout or street in that area could be a meaningful gesture.

Museums dedicated to music legends provide a space to showcase their life, work, and memorabilia. These museums would be designed to educate and inspire future generations about the artist’s achievements and influence. They also serve as cultural hubs, organizing exhibitions, concerts, and events related to the musician’s legacy.

When implementing these proposals, it’s essential to involve the local community, fans, and experts to ensure the choices are representative and respectful.

Additionally, securing appropriate permissions and support from relevant authorities is crucial.

Legendary Highlife musician, Nana Acheampong has urged the Ghana Music Rights Organization (GHAMRO) and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture to honor legendary artists.

He pointed out the impact of Highlife music on national identity and urged that the hard work and contributions of icons do not go unrecognized.

“Without music, there’s no life. What we do is very important to the nation. So it is only fair that these people are recognized for the hard work they put in: ET Mensah, Adane Best, Koo Nimo, Nana Ampadu, and Daddy Lumba among others. Let’s start naming streets, roundabouts, etc to honor them and their legacy.”

Appreciating music legends through streets, roundabouts, and museums is a powerful way to celebrate their lasting impact on the world of music and inspire future generations.

Veteran Musicians’ Welfare, A Necessity

legend
Legendary Ghanaian musicians

Ensuring the welfare of veteran musicians is an important responsibility that requires a well-structured approach.

GHAMRO ought to establish a dedicated department or committee focused on the welfare of veteran musicians. This department would be responsible for addressing the specific needs and concerns of veteran musicians and ensuring they receive proper support.

Pension Schemes for Veteran musicians would provide them with financial security during their retirement years.

A healthcare program should be implemented to provide affordable and accessible medical services for veteran musicians. This could include partnerships with healthcare providers, offering discounted rates, or specialized services for musicians.

Establishing an association or union specifically for veteran musicians would give them a unified voice and platform to advocate for their rights and welfare. This organization could negotiate fair contracts, lobby for policy changes, and provide legal support when needed.

GHAMRO should ensure that veteran musicians receive their fair share of royalties from their recorded music, performances, and other related rights. Transparent and efficient systems should be put in place to track and distribute royalties to the veterans.

Establishing training programs and workshops specifically designed for veteran musicians would help them acquire new skills, adapt to changing industry trends, and explore alternative career opportunities. This could include music production, songwriting, music business management, and other relevant areas.

Many veteran musicians struggle with financial management. Providing financial literacy programs, workshops, and mentorship opportunities would equip them with the necessary skills to manage their finances, investments, and royalties effectively.

Creating affordable housing options or rental schemes for veteran musicians would help address their housing needs. This could involve collaboration with real estate developers, government agencies, and housing cooperatives.

Organizing annual or biennial awards specifically dedicated to honoring veteran musicians would not only provide them with recognition but also create opportunities for networking, collaboration, and increased visibility.

Many veteran musicians have lost their lives due to the lack of proper implementation of these structures which could have aided them when they were in dire need of help.

It is crucial to involve the government, music industry stakeholders, and veteran musicians themselves in the development and implementation of these structures.

This collaborative approach will ensure that the welfare of veteran musicians in Ghana is effectively addressed.
