Reggae Musician Shares Reason For Touring Ghetto With Award

Ras Kuuku

Reggae musician, Ras Kuuku revealed that his tour to the ghettos with his plaque in 2020 popularized the Ghana Music Awards scheme.

According to him, there is no doubt that he is part of the Ghana Music Awards’ favorite artists.

“When I received the VGMA award, I made the scheme look so popular and bright. I am the only artist who has made the scheme more popular than any artist has.

“VGMA has their favourite and this is true because Kojo Korankye might be their favourite, but in all, there is no doubt Ras Kuuku is one of the best in Ghana.”

Ras Kuuku

He also shared his reasons for touring the ghettos with the plaque, highlighting it is also a part of Ghana.

“I went parading around town with the award because those people made me who I am now. They haven’t seen the award before so I needed them to see what it looked like and I left the plague in the ghetto because that place is also part of Ghana.”

Ras Kuuku

He further denied claims of him misplacing his award.

“I did not lose it, and neither did I misplace it. It is in my house. The award delivered through the dispatch was not mine, but that of one artist who didn’t have ‘sense’.”

Ras Kuuku

Ras Kuuku expressed his confidence in winning the Best Reggae Song and Artiste of the Year 2024 honors at the upcoming Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA).

“I’m winning and nobody is winning,” Ras Kuuku boldly stated.

This year’s nomination list sees Ras Kuuku competing in the Best Reggae/Dancehall Song category with his hit single “Eyeball Remix” featuring Samini, as well as the Best Reggae/Dancehall Artist category alongside other notable musicians such as Epixode, Stonebwoy, and Samini.

Ras Kuuku emphasized his impact on the Reggae and Dancehall genre last year, referencing his performance at Puom Fest and tireless efforts to promote the genre nationwide.

“Who in the category has promoted Reggae more than me?” he questioned.

The Dancehall artist also warned the TGMA organizers, cautioning them against making a mistake by awarding an artist who is not a true representative of the Dancehall genre.

He stated that if he didn’t win, it would be a disgrace to the Reggae genre, and he would also “disgrace the scheme” in response.

Ras Kuuku Expresses Disappointment in Kinaata

Ras Kuuku disclosed that he initially had a verse on Kofi Kinaata’s popular 2023 track ‘Effiakuma Love,’ which was later removed for reasons unknown.

He said he is unhappy with such a development as other musicians are doing the same to him after recording with them.

“I was on the Effiakuma Love song. I did my verse of the song but I do not know why it was taken off. This was somewhere in 2020. After I did the song, he went to sing it again.

“A lot of people are doing [the same] thing to me in this industry but I just keep quiet and observe without talking about it. I believe one-day things will fall in place.”

Ras Kuuku

He further narrated how his verse was taken off, stating he was the one who advised Kofi Kinaata to lighten his voice on the song.

“So why didn’t he say there was a mistake in the song? Because the first song he sang, his voice was thicker than mine, so I gave him a lighter voice.

“He went back to sing it again and when the song was released the following day, they came back apologizing for not coming for my data. I then told them to stop talking about the issue.”

Ras Kuuku

Despite the initial disappointment, Ras Kuuku emphasized that there was no bad blood between him and Kofi Kinaata but vowed to never grant an invitation for a collaboration.

Kofi Kinaata responded to the allegations made by Ras Kuuku regarding the removal of his verse from the hit song “Effiakuma Love.”

During a TikTok live session, Kinaata provided a detailed explanation that contradicts Ras Kuuku’s claims.

He firmly denied these allegations, stating that he had never heard Ras Kuuku’s verse on the song.

He explained that the initial recording in 2019 was sent to Ras Kuuku for a feature, but due to an oversight, his manager failed to send him this version before recording a live version without Kuuku’s verse.

Kinaata emphasized that there was no ill will between them, citing a previous collaboration as proof of their good affinity.
