As Ghana gears up for its much-anticipated elections, the importance of a free and vibrant media cannot be overstated. Journalists play a crucial role in providing accurate information, scrutinizing political candidates, and holding those in power accountable.

However, recent incidents of harassment, intimidation, and violence against journalists have raised concerns about their safety. It is imperative for the Ghanaian government to prioritize the protection of journalists, ensuring their ability to report freely and without fear during this election period.

Minister for Information, Honourable Fatimatu Abubakar, has emphasized the crucial role that the media plays in any democracy and has assured the government’s commitment to the safety of journalists, particularly during this election period. Her comments came during a familiarization visit to various media organizations in Ghana.

“The Ministry has established the Coordinated Mechanism on the Safety of Journalists (CMSJ); A dedicated mechanism that allows journalists to report threats or incidents in pursuit of justice and the Media Capacity Enhancement Programme (MCEP), which provides training and resources for journalists to enhance their skills.”

Unfortunately, journalists in Ghana have faced a series of challenges, including physical attacks, harassment, and legal intimidations. These threats not only endanger the lives of journalists but also erode the foundations of democracy. In recent years, there have been disturbing incidents of violence against journalists covering political rallies, exposing the risks they face for simply doing their jobs.

The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to intensifying sensitization on the implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) Law. The RTI Law grants citizens the right to access information held by public institutions, promoting transparency and accountability. By raising awareness about this law, the government aims to empower citizens and ensure the effective implementation of their right to information.

Furthermore, Honourable Abubakar expressed the government’s determination to lay the Broadcasting Bill before parliament this year. This bill seeks to regulate the broadcasting sector, ensuring that it operates in a fair and transparent manner. By enacting this legislation, the government aims to create an environment that promotes media freedom while safeguarding the public interest.

In her remarks, the Minister also mentioned the possibility of establishing an RTI fund. This fund would ensure the smooth flow of resources needed to fulfill the increasing demand for information. By exploring this option, the government demonstrates its commitment to supporting the effective implementation of the RTI Law and facilitating access to information for all citizens.

The Minister’s visit to the State broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), Unity Group (Vision1 Fm/ Light Tv), Media General, and Class Media Group signifies the government’s recognition of the important role these media organizations play in informing the public. It also highlights the government’s commitment to engaging with media professionals and understanding their needs and concerns.

As Ghana prepares for upcoming elections, it is encouraging to see the government’s emphasis on the safety of journalists and the promotion of media freedom. By establishing mechanisms such as the CMSJ and implementing programs like the MCEP, the government is taking proactive steps to protect journalists and enhance their skills. The commitment to sensitizing the public on the RTI Law and laying the Broadcasting Bill before parliament further demonstrates the government’s efforts to create a conducive environment for the media to operate.

It is hoped that these initiatives will not only ensure the safety and well-being of journalists but also contribute to the growth and development of Ghana’s media landscape. By fostering a robust and independent media sector, Ghana can continue to strengthen its democracy and uphold the principles of transparency, accountability, and freedom of expression.
