The leadership of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended its members and supporters for their unwavering solidarity following the recent arrest of the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency in the Central Region, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor by the Ghana Police Service.

The National Communications Officer of the opposition party, Sammy Gyamfi Esq., in a statement emphasized that the overwhelming support and solidarity shown by the party’s members and supporters across the length and breadth of the country is worth commending.

“On behalf of the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), I wish to extend profound appreciation to all comrades, who joined us at the Cantonments Police Station; those who could not join us physically but joined the #FreeNaaKoryooNow advocacy and all those who supported in diverse ways, the call for the release of our Parliamentary Candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor.

Mr Gyamfi further asserted that the active participation of teeming supporters in the vigil held on Friday night, June 7, 2024, in solidarity and agitation for the release of the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency in the Central Region, Naa Koryoo underscored the party’s unified stance against what it perceives as oppressive actions by the ruling New Patriotic Party administration.

Sammy Gyamfi, Esq., the National Communications Officer of the NDC, also highlighted the party’s gratitude towards all who participated in the #FreeNaaKoryooNow advocacy, whether in person or through other means of support.

He further stated that the oneness and unity towards the advocacy and demand for the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency sent a clear and powerful message to the “despotic” leadership of President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia led administration and its collaborators within the Ghana Police Service.

Mr Gyamfi thus emphasized that through the active participation of all its members in the call for the release of Mrs Naa Koryoo, the party has shown that it will not be intimidated or silenced by oppressive tactics by the incumbent administration going into the upcoming general elections.

Calls for Justice and Fairness

Furthermore, Sammy Gyamfi Esq., the National Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress praised the peaceful and law-abiding nature of the party’s members and emphasized the party’s commitment to maintaining peace while standing firm against any form of bias or undue aggression from elements within the security agencies.

He condemned the perceived high-handedness of some individuals affiliated with the ruling New Patriotic Party in the various law enforcement agencies and reiterated the National Democratic Congress’s demand for professionalism, fairness, and consistency in the application of the law and the delivery of justice.

“As we approach the crucial 2024 General Elections, the NDC remains steadfast in its call for equitable treatment from all law enforcement agencies. We will continue to advocate for a just and fair electoral process, ensuring that every action is scrutinized for impartiality”.

Mr Gyamfi concluded his remarks by expressing the National Democratic Congress’s leadership assurance to its members and the general public of the party’s commitment to a fair and transparent electoral process.

In an earlier statement, the flagbearer for the National Democratic Congress, former President John Dramani Mahama vehemently criticized what he perceived as the selective administration of justice under the current administration.

He questioned the failure of the Ghana Police Service and the New Patriotic Party administration to apprehend and subject the incumbent Member of Parliament for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson when she fired a gunshot at citizens during the 2020 general elections.

He emphasized that what the current administration masterminded to break and damage the National Democratic Congress parliamentary candidate, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor’s quest to unseat the incumbent lawmaker has rather propelled and energized her for victory.

Mr Mahama also added that the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Phillis Naa Koryoo Okunor has proven worthy to be elected as the Member of Parliament for the area in the upcoming general elections.
