Artists Advised to Understand Terms of Contract Before Signing Record Labels

Robert Klah

In the music industry, record labels play a crucial role in helping artists reach a wider audience and achieve success.

However, before signing a contract with a record label, it is essential for artists to fully understand the terms and conditions of the agreement to protect their rights and ensure fair treatment.

In many cases, record labels will require artists to assign the rights to their music to the label, which means the label will have control over how the music is used and distributed.

Artists need to be aware of these rights and negotiate for more favorable terms, such as retaining ownership of their music or having more control over how it is used.

Additionally, artists should pay close attention to the financial terms of their contracts. This includes details such as how royalties will be calculated, how expenses will be recouped, and how advances will be repaid.

It is also important for artists to consider the promotional and marketing support that the record label will provide. This includes details such as how the label will promote the artist’s music, what resources will be allocated to marketing efforts, and how the artist will be involved in the promotion process.

Creatives ought to ensure that the label is committed to promoting their music effectively and that they are satisfied with the level of support provided.

Artists should carefully review the termination and exit clauses of their contracts. It incorporates details such as how the contract can be terminated, what rights the artist will have if they decide to leave the label, and how any disputes will be resolved.

The Public Relations Officer for Charterhouse, Robert Klah, has advised artists to make efforts to understand the terms of their contracts before signing with record labels.

Robert Klah pointed out that a record label’s proposal is not just about the money but also includes the skills, connections, and exposure they offer to artists.

“Signing onto a record label could be good or could be bad. What is important is the fact that you need to understand that you are signing a deal. What are the details of that particular deal? What is the contract stating? We need to appreciate how the record labels work.

“And then you (the artist) also need to understand your role in the grand scheme of things. When it comes to record labels and why they need you to be able to play ball or what you’re bringing to the table. The raw material they need is you. The artist wants to make and sell records.”

By being informed and proactive in negotiating their contracts, artists can position themselves for a successful and fulfilling career in music.

Government Urged to Provide More Resources to the Creative Sector

Rex Omar

In recent years, the creative sector has increasingly become a significant contributor to the economy and cultural development of nations worldwide. Recognizing this, the President of GHAMRO’s call for more resources to be allocated to the creative sector is a commendable and forward-thinking initiative.

By allocating resources to the creative sector, governments foster an environment conducive to innovation, entrepreneurship, and the development of creative industries such as music, film, visual arts, performing arts, and literature.

Additionally, supporting the creative sector promotes cultural diversity and preservation. Artists and creators play a crucial role in expressing and preserving cultural heritage, traditions, and identities. By providing resources, governments ensure the continuation and promotion of cultural practices, fostering a sense of national pride and identity.

President of the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHMARO), Rex Omar voiced his concerns over the apparent disregard for the creative arts sector in Ghana.

He pointed out that this issue arises from a cultural tendency to undervalue the work of creative professionals.

Omar highlighted the potential of the creative sector to boost job creation and economic growth, and called for more resources to be allocated to that sector.

“It’s about time that as a country, if we are serious about creating jobs for the youth and growing the economy, we need to take a serious look at the creative sector. If government decides to spend half of the money they spend on football in Ghana on Creative Arts, it will shock what can be done with that amount of money for the sector.”

Rex Omar

By prioritizing the creative sector, governments can unlock its full potential and create an environment that nurtures and celebrates the arts.
