Ghana Pledges Free, Fair, Transparent Elections Amid Global Watch

In a significant diplomatic statement, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice of Ghana, Godfred Dame, has assured the United States and the international community that the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections scheduled for 7 December 2024 will be conducted freely, fairly, and transparently.

Mr. Dame highlighted the global significance of the year 2024, noting that approximately 64 countries, including Ghana and the United States, are slated to hold national elections. He hoped these elections would proceed without the challenges that often cast doubts on electoral outcomes.

“The Government of Ghana assures the United States of America and the entire international community of its commitment to ensuring that Ghana’s upcoming elections will be peaceful, transparent, free, and fair.”

Mr. Dame emphasized the importance of smooth electoral processes in both countries, hoping they would reaffirm the status of Ghana and the United States as models of democracy worldwide. He reiterated the Ghanaian government’s commitment to a peaceful and transparent electoral process.

Recognizing the importance of civic engagement in promoting social justice and strengthening democracy, Dame assured the international community of Ghana’s dedication to upholding democratic principles in the upcoming elections.

“The democratic process does not only shape the future leadership of a country but also reflects the aspirations and prosperities of her citizens.

“The world will watch with keen interest as voters in both countries exercise their democratic rights and open the next chapter of the two nations in their respective political landscapes.”

Strengthening US-Ghana Relations

The Attorney-General also highlighted the robust bilateral relations between the United States and Ghana, particularly in the areas of security and economic cooperation. He welcomed the US government’s recent 10-year plan aimed at supporting efforts to address terrorism and violent extremism in Africa.

“The United States and Ghana have worked together to enhance regional security, combat terrorism, and promote peacekeeping efforts. Joint training programmes and capacity-building initiatives have strengthened the capacities of our security forces and contributed to greater stability in the region.”

The Attorney-General underscored the economic and trade cooperation as a cornerstone of the US-Ghana relationship. He acknowledged the significant role of the United States as a trade and investment partner, contributing to Ghana’s economic growth and job creation.

The Attorney-General further mentioned the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA) as instrumental in promoting trade and fostering innovation across various sectors of Ghana’s economy.

“It is imperative to note the effort of the US Government through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) in contributing to the development of Ghana in various sectors of the country’s economy.

“In 2023, USAID dedicated over $140 million in support of health, economic growth, agriculture, education, governance, and security issues in Ghana.”

Mr. Dame also highlighted USAID’s contribution of $3.7 million and learning materials to Ghanaian public schools, benefiting 1.2 million pupils from primaries 1 to 3 in over 11,000 schools.

Godfred Dame concluded his address by expressing his heartfelt wishes for a successful and smooth electoral process in the United States, envisioning a future filled with hope, progress, and the collective well-being of all Americans. His remarks underscored the enduring partnership between Ghana and the United States, rooted in mutual respect, cooperation, and a shared commitment to democratic values.
