The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), the Ghana Independent Broadcasters Association (GIBA), and the Private Newspapers and Online News Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG), along with their partners, the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) and the New Media Association, have collectively condemned all unethical and reckless media practices by journalists and media practitioners.

The media coalition emphasized the critical importance of maintaining high standards of professionalism and responsibility in media conduct. They reminded journalists, media practitioners, and media organizations that the defense of media freedoms is intrinsically linked to how responsibly these entities perform their duties.

The coalition expressed deep concern over the increasing instances of irresponsible and unprofessional media behavior in Ghana. They highlighted the importance of adhering to the GJA Code of Ethics and the GIBA Code of Conduct, which clearly outline the responsibilities of journalists and media practitioners.

“In the spirit of those professional codes, this Coalition condemns in no uncertain terms, comments and pronouncements that have the potential to undermine Ghana’s peace and stability as a democracy.”

The media coalition stressed that such actions could negatively impact the collective efforts to protect and defend media freedoms and freedom of expression in the country.

Ghana is widely regarded as an oasis of peace in West Africa, a reputation that must be fiercely protected. The coalition underscored the crucial role the media plays in maintaining national peace and security, urging all media professionals to conform to the established standards and laws.

“We, therefore, urge all to conform to the tenets and standards we have set for ourselves in ensuring that everything we do is in conformity with the laws of the country and the ethics of our profession.”

The media coalition drew a stark reminder from the Rwandan genocide three decades ago, warning against plunging the country into similar chaos through irresponsible media practices.

Approaching Elections and the Need for Responsible Reporting

Press Neutrality

With the general elections approaching in December, the coalition noted the charged political atmosphere and the potential for incitement. They called for sensitivity and caution in media reportage to avoid triggering violence.

“We are of the view that being critical and holding leaders and government accountable to the people should not be conflated with spewing hate speech and insulting personalities,” the media coalition emphasized.

The media coalition further reaffirmed its commitment to defending media freedom and free speech but warned against unethical behavior that undermines public trust in the media.

Case in Point: Captain Smart’s Controversial Comments

The coalition cited a recent example involving Blessed Godsbrain Smart, known as ‘Captain Smart’, who made inflammatory remarks on Accra-based Onua TV. He described people who would vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming elections as ‘beasts’.

“Given the severity of his utterances and the ethical breach, we call on the Board and Management of Media General to take immediate action to mete out appropriate sanctions to Mr. Smart.”

The media coalition argued that such actions would serve as a deterrent to others and enhance public confidence in the media organization’s commitment to professionalism.

Call for Ethical Media Practices

The coalition urged all journalists, media practitioners, and media organizations to be mindful of their utterances and reportage. They stressed that the aim is to prevent the country from descending into violence with its grave consequences.

“This caution is not a gag on the right to free expression. There are decorous means and avenues for journalists and citizens to express their opinions loud and clear.”

Coalition of Media (GJA, GIBA, PRINPAG, MFWA, and NMA)

The media coalition reiterated its commitment to defending media freedom while championing media professionalism.

The press statement by the GJA, GIBA, PRINPAG, MFWA, and the New Media Association served as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with media freedom. The media’s role in shaping public opinion and safeguarding democracy is paramount, and it must be exercised with the utmost integrity and responsibility.
