The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Henry Quartey, has reiterated the Government’s steadfast commitment to the effective implementation of the West African Police Information System (WAPIS) programme in Ghana.

Hon. Henry Quartey emphasized the crucial need for continued support and collaboration to ensure the programme’s success in enhancing regional security and cooperation. Hon. Henry Quartey made these remarks during a meeting with a delegation from Interpol, led by the European Union Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Irchad Razaaly, at his office in Accra.

“The WAPIS programme is instrumental in our collective efforts to combat crime and enhance security within West Africa. The Government of Ghana remains fully committed to ensuring its effective implementation and sustainability.

“We recognize the importance of a robust information-sharing system in tackling the myriad of security challenges we face today.”

The WAPIS programme, supported by the European Union, aims to enhance the capacity of security agencies in Ghana and the broader West African region to tackle transnational security issues. By improving information sharing and cooperation among West African countries, WAPIS plays a vital role in combating crime and ensuring regional stability.

The programme’s primary goal is to create a robust and integrated information-sharing system that allows police forces across West Africa to communicate and collaborate more effectively. This integration is essential for tracking criminal activities that cross borders, such as human trafficking, drug smuggling, and terrorism.

“The WAPIS programme has significantly improved our ability to share intelligence and coordinate operations with our neighbours. This has led to more effective responses to security threats that affect not just Ghana, but the entire region.”

One of the critical aspects of the WAPIS programme is capacity building. The European Union has been pivotal in providing training and resources to Ghana’s security personnel, ensuring they are well-equipped to use the WAPIS system effectively.
