Veep Promises Digital Economy Boost to Tackle Youth Unemployment

In a recent campaign rally in Wa, Upper West Region, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), outlined ambitious plans to tackle youth unemployment through digital empowerment.

Addressing a large gathering at the Wa Tendamba Junior High School Park, Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of digitalization in creating job opportunities for the youth.

Dr. Bawumia announced an ambitious plan to train at least one million youth in digital skills. He highlighted that this initiative is crucial for equipping the younger generation with the necessary tools to thrive in the evolving global economy. By fostering a digitally literate society, he aims to build a robust economy capable of generating sustainable employment for the youth.

“This election is a simple choice, do we want to go into the future, into the digital age or do we want to go back into the ‘akonfem’ (guinea fowl) age?” Dr. Bawumia questioned the crowd.

In his address, Dr. Bawumia reiterated the NPP government’s commitment to ensuring that every child in Ghana receives an education, regardless of their economic status.

Dr. Bawumia cited the Free Senior High School policy as a testament to this commitment, describing it as part of a broader agenda to prepare the nation for the digital age.

Dr. Bawumia also pointed out the restoration of teacher trainee and nursing training allowances by the current NPP government, which were previously canceled by the administration of former President John Dramani Mahama. This, he argued, demonstrated the NPP’s dedication to making education accessible to all Ghanaians.

Dr. Bawumia further announced plans to improve internet connectivity across all communities in Ghana. He proposed the abolition of taxes on mobile phones to ensure that every young Ghanaian has access to a smartphone, which he identified as essential for maximizing the benefits of a digital economy.

Dr. Bawumia called on the electorates in the Upper West Region to support his presidential bid in the upcoming December 7, 2024, elections. He emphasized that their votes are crucial for the realization of his vision for Ghana, particularly for the youth.

“We want to go forward; we want to change this country. I want to build an economy that can create jobs for the youth and that is why we are digitalizing the economy.”

Hajia Humu Awudu, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Wa Central Constituency, echoed Dr. Bawumia’s sentiments. She urged the youth to vote for both her and Dr. Bawumia, asserting that their election would result in more job opportunities for young people.

Hajia Awudu criticized the current Member of Parliament for Wa Central, Dr. Hassan Rashid Pelpuo, claiming he has not adequately addressed the unemployment issues facing the youth in the constituency.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign promises in Wa reflect a clear vision for leveraging technology to solve youth unemployment and foster economic growth. By focusing on digital skills training, enhancing internet connectivity, and supporting education, the NPP aims to position Ghana as a leader in the digital economy.
