Ghanaian broadcaster and creative entrepreneur, Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD), has refuted speculations that he might have an interest in a political position if the National Democratic Congress (NDC), wins power in this year’s election.

Curbing speculations of his possible aspiration for a political appointment should the NDC take the restraints of government, KOD said his basic priority is to make sure John Mahama wins power.

“I am not looking at that at all. For me essentially I want this government and John Mahama re-instated as the President of the Republic,” he noted.

Asked if he only endorsed the NDC or if he was an NDC member, KOD said “It was more of an endorsement but if you saw the fugu that I was wearing…,” he quipped.

“That’s why I gave the preamble and my track record and background with the party. I was supposed to be NDC. I’ve worked at Radio Gold for God’s sake.

“I mean no one was hired on a political basis for getting a job at Radio Gold. It never happened. But somehow, you get to understand how things work in that space.”

The celebrated master of ceremonies and the founder of the Nineteen57 fashion company also stated that he has not considered getting into mainstream politics yet.

“It’s not an area I have critically thought of. But I mean we’ve always served for what we do in the creative space. We are public servants as well so if I have to serve in that space, why not.”

Kofi Okyere Darko publicly declared his support for John Mahama on July 27, 2024, during the NDC’s 2024 official campaign launch in Tamale.

The media personality said that he had always rooted for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in 2007 and 2015 but he lost hope when the NPP failed to keep their promises.

Fashion icon, Kofi Okyere Darko (KOD) stated that his endorsement of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for the upcoming December 7, elections was voluntary and unpaid.

According to him, his endorsement of the party was driven by his belief in Mahama’s leadership.

KOD acknowledged the challenges Mahama’s previous tenure faced, particularly the severe power crisis known as “dumsor”, but expressed confidence in Mahama’s ability to continue his work and address the current issues facing the country.

“I was not invited by anyone to endorse President Mahama. I showed up. In the past, people have been paid to do this. I did not get paid a dime. And if it’s something I have to do a billion times, I’ll do it without thinking twice.”

KOD

He added, “For where we are now, why don’t we just bring the man back to continue where he started?”

KOD declared his support for the NPP in late 2023, the personality expressed disappointment with Akufo-Addo’s administration, describing it as one of the most turbulent periods in Ghana’s history.

He praised Mahama for resolving the power crisis (dumsor) before leaving office and felt that Mahama should be given the chance to continue his work.

He also praised Mahama’s journey from serving the people of Bole Bamboi in 1996 to becoming President and his capability to lead Ghana to the next level.

KOD expressed his belief in Mahama’s policies especially those targeted at the youth including the 24-hour economy policy and plans to train 1 million Ghanaian youth in IT.

Kofi Okyere Darko said his decision was influenced by Akufo-Addo’s call for proactive citizenship and his belief that Mahama, rather than the NPP, could make a significant positive impact on the country.
