Highlife music, a genre that originated in Ghana in the early 20th century, has evolved into a rich cultural tapestry that reflects the nation’s history, values, and social dynamics.

As one of the most celebrated music genres in West Africa, Highlife has produced legendary artists and continues to influence contemporary music.

However, to ensure its continued relevance and inspire the younger generation, it is imperative to introduce more award categories that recognize the diverse talents within the Highlife genre.

Awards play a crucial role in the music industry by providing recognition and validation to artists. They celebrate creativity, hard work, and dedication, often serving as a motivational tool for both established and emerging talents.

In Ghana, awards such as the Ghana Music Awards and the International Reggae and World Music Awards have significantly contributed to the growth of various music genres, including Highlife.

However, the current categories do not fully encompass the evolving nature of the genre or the aspirations of younger artists.

Multiple award-winning singer, Bisa Kdei has asserted that awards schemes in Ghana should have more Highlife categories so that young musicians will be inspired to pursue the genre.

He stated the need to preserve Highlife music and own it as a people.

“We need to have more Highlife categories in our music award schemes so that the younger generation will be motivated to do more Highlife music. We can’t live for others to come and take it. For me, I have decided to fight for Highlife music because it has opened many doors for me as a musician.”

“Sometimes artists are shy about being labeled as Highlife artists, thinking that Highlife is for the old,” he added.

Best Highlife Collaboration is a category that would recognize artists who collaborate across genres, fostering creativity and unity in the music industry. It encourages young musicians to experiment and work together, blending traditional Highlife with contemporary sounds.

Best Highlife Newcomer is aimed at recognizing emerging talents, this category would spotlight new artists who show promise in the Highlife genre. It would encourage young musicians to pursue their dreams and provide them with a platform to showcase their work.

Best Highlife Music Video, Best Highlife Producer, Best Highlife Songwriting, Highlife Music Influencer of the Year, Best Highlife Traditional Fusion, and Highlife Community Impact Award, among others, are all categories that would help recognize artists and their good works.

Benefits of Expanding Highlife Awards Categories

By introducing new categories, the awards promote a broader range of musical styles and influences within Highlife, encouraging artists to innovate and explore new sounds.

More categories foster a sense of community among artists, as they celebrate each other’s achievements and collaborate on projects, ultimately strengthening the Highlife genre.

With the promise of recognition in various categories, younger musicians are more inclined to pursue careers in Highlife, ensuring the genre’s sustainability and growth.

New categories that emphasize traditional elements inspire young artists to incorporate their cultural heritage into their music, preserving and promoting Ghanaian traditions.

A more diverse and vibrant Highlife awards framework attracts international attention, showcasing Ghanaian talent on a global stage and encouraging collaborations with artists from other countries.

Bisa Kdei advocated the need for the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) to digitize its system to enable artists to track their earnings.

The expansion of Highlife awards categories presents an exciting opportunity to inspire and nurture the next generation of musicians in Ghana.

By recognizing a wider array of talents and contributions to the genre, the awards foster innovation, collaboration, and a deeper appreciation for Highlife music.

As Ghana continues to evolve culturally and musically, it is essential to celebrate and encourage the voices of young artists who will carry the torch of Highlife into the future.

By investing in their recognition and development, we ensure that Highlife remains a vibrant and integral part of Ghana’s cultural identity for generations to come.
