As Ghana gears up for its highly anticipated general elections in December 2024, political leaders and stakeholders are increasingly calling for a peaceful and civil electoral process.

Among these voices is Peter Mac Manu, a former National Chairman of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), who has made an impassioned plea for peace and unity during this critical period.

Mr. Mac Manu emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability as the nation approaches the polls. He highlighted the risks associated with political violence, urging all Ghanaians to reject any form of aggression that could undermine the country’s democratic process.

“We have 100 days to the election. Election needs peace. We cannot go into an election in any manner of violence that will threaten the stability of this nation,” Mr. Mac Manu stated. His remarks come at a time when tensions often run high, and the potential for conflict can be heightened by the charged political atmosphere.

One of the key points raised by Mr. Mac Manu was the danger of hate speech during the election season. He warned that hate speech has the potential to sow division and incite violence, drawing parallels to the unfortunate experiences of other African countries where inflammatory rhetoric has led to civil unrest and even war.

Mr. Mac Manu’s cautionary note serves as a reminder of the fragile nature of peace during election periods and the responsibility of both leaders and citizens to foster a climate of respect and tolerance.

In addition to addressing the general populace, Mr. Mac Manu specifically appealed to the political class to exercise restraint in their campaign strategies. He urged politicians to focus on presenting their ideas and policies to the electorate rather than engaging in tactics that could disrupt the peace and stability of the state.

Condemning Misinformation and Disinformation

Another critical issue that Mr. Mac Manu addressed was the prevalence of misinformation and disinformation in the lead-up to elections. In an era where social media and digital platforms play a significant role in shaping public opinion, the spread of false information can have devastating consequences.

Mr. Mac Manu called on all stakeholders, including political parties, the media, and citizens, to be vigilant and responsible in the dissemination of information.

“We should avoid misinformation and disinformation and let us treat each other, whether we are in the same party or different party, with civility and decorum,” he urged. By promoting truthful and respectful discourse, Mr. Mac Manu hopes to contribute to a peaceful and credible electoral process.

Beyond his warnings and appeals, Mr. Mac Manu’s address was also a call for national unity. He underscored the need for all Ghanaians to come together, regardless of political affiliation, to ensure that the December 2024 elections are conducted in a manner that reflects the country’s commitment to democracy and peace.

The former NPP Chairman’s message is particularly significant given his long-standing involvement in Ghana’s political landscape. Having served as the National Chairman of the NPP, Mr. Mac Manu is well-versed in the dynamics of electoral processes and the importance of maintaining peace during such critical times.

With just months left until the polls, the onus is on all citizens, political leaders, and stakeholders to heed these calls and work together to ensure that the upcoming elections are not only free and fair but also peaceful and unifying for the nation.
