The secretary for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 manifesto Committee, Madam Nana Oye Bampoe has Underscored her role in the NDC 2024 manifesto.

Madam Nana Oye Bampoe began by emphasizing that this was not his first time holding the role, having served in a similar capacity in the previous election year. Nana Bampoe’s experiences and insights were crucial in shaping the direction of the manifesto, which she described as both exciting and demanding.

“It was exciting, It was a lot of work. We had 22 committees in place, across 3 main thematic areas; we had finance and economy, we also had human development and also governance.’’

“…We looked at the prevailing conditions in Ghana, issues, and challenges, and came up with proposals with the underlining social democratic ideology of the NDC.”

Moreover, Nana Bampoe highlighted that this social democratic framework, which is at the core of the NDC’s principles, emphasizes putting the needs of Ghanaians first. The manifesto drafting process involved listening to Ghanaians, understanding their needs, and developing proposals that address their challenges. Nana Bampoe stressed that the focus was on creating a document that would not only reflect the aspirations of the people but also bring hope to their lives.

Engaging with Ghanaians: A Bottoms-Up Approach

A key aspect of the manifesto drafting process was the engagement with Ghanaians. According to Nana Bampoe, the party, led by its flagbearer, former President John Dramani Mahama, embarked on a comprehensive listening tour across various regions, engaging with civil society organizations (CSOs), corporate bodies, and ordinary citizens. Nana Bampoe emphasized that this bottoms-up approach ensured that the manifesto resonated with the people.

“We invited the members of the public to submit memoranda. So, a lot of stakeholders submitted memoranda.”

Nana Bampoe mentioned, adding that various groups were involved in the process. The involvement of every level of the NDC party, from the branch to the national executives, was also integral to the manifesto’s creation. Nana Bampoe noted the contributions of the communications directorate, the flagbearer, and the minority caucus in Parliament. The inclusivity of the process was further demonstrated by the national dialogue held at Peduase Lodge, where various stakeholders participated in discussions.

Nana Bampoe also highlighted the engagement with different sectors of society, including nurses, persons with disabilities, labor unions, and artisans.

“We met with persons with disability. So, it was a lot of work, a lot of engagement to solicit views and also solicit issues on the ground to help us to carve out realistic proposals.”

Confidence in the Manifesto’s Impact

When asked how confident she was, she asserted that the NDC’s 2024 manifesto would meet the needs of Ghanaians and help secure victory in the December elections. Nana Dampoe expressed a strong belief in the document’s relevance. Nana Bampoe noted that the manifesto was a result of the party’s social democratic methodology, which focuses on the people’s needs.

“I’m very confident that it meets the needs of the Ghanaians because it was a bottoms-up approach.”

Nana Bampoe emphasized that the thorough engagement with various groups, from private schools to creative arts stakeholders ensured that the manifesto addressed the real issues faced by different sectors. Nana Bampoe cited several examples, including proposals to address fiscal and monetary challenges, the concerns of cattle owners regarding grazing conflicts, and the needs of women involved in the cattle value chain.

“They see themselves in the proposals that we have put in,” she noted, referring to the various stakeholders involved in the drafting process.

A Path of Advocacy and Human Rights

Beyond her role in the manifesto drafting, Nana Bampoe’s journey in advocacy, human rights, and gender issues is well known.  Nana Bampoe revealed that her passion for helping people and ensuring their rights are not violated led him to pursue a career in human rights law and advocacy.

“I believe I’m an empath, and I love helping people. I love working with people, and I believe that is what I’m very passionate about, ensuring that rights of people are not abused, rights are not violated.”

According to Nana Bampoe, her passion led her to pursue a master’s degree in human rights and democratization in Africa at the University of Pretoria. Even before that, she had been involved in pro-bono cases at the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA) clinic. Nana Bampoe’s dedication to the cause ultimately led to her appointment as Ghana’s first minister for gender, children, and social protection.

Reflecting on her tenure as minister, Nana Bampoe expressed gratitude to former President John Dramani Mahama for the opportunity.

“...[Despite] all the challenges, I’m very grateful to his excellency John Dramani Mahama.” She added that She and her team worked tirelessly to make the ministry one of the best across all ministries, departments, and agencies.
