Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has enthusiastically welcomed Virgin Atlantic’s decision to resume operations in Ghana starting May 2025.

As the 25th airline to operate out of Kotoka International Airport, Virgin Atlantic’s daily flights on the Boeing 787 Dreamliner mark a significant milestone for Ghana’s aviation sector. This development underscores the growing confidence in Ghana’s aviation industry and aligns with the nation’s aspirations to establish itself as the premier aviation hub in West Africa.

In response to Virgin Atlantic’s decision, the Managing Director of GACL, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, expressed her excitement and commitment to ensuring the success of the airline’s operations.

“We are thrilled to welcome Virgin Atlantic back to Ghana, which will become the 25th international airline to operate at Kotoka International Airport.

“We look forward to collaborating with Virgin Atlantic to ensure a seamless launch of their operations and continued facilitation at the airport.”

Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, Managing Director of GACL

Mrs. Opare’s statement reflected GACL’s proactive approach to maintaining high standards of service and operational excellence at Kotoka International Airport.

The company has consistently worked towards enhancing the airport’s capacity and efficiency, ensuring it meets international standards and caters to the growing number of airlines and passengers.

With the increasing number of airlines operating out of Kotoka International Airport, GACL has also announced plans to optimize the use of Terminal 2.

Mrs. Opare highlighted the Board’s decision to relocate some airlines to Terminal 2 to decongest Terminal 3, which currently handles the majority of international flights. This move is aimed at easing long queues, reducing wait times, and improving the overall passenger experience.

The strategic utilization of Terminal 2 is a forward-thinking approach that will not only enhance operational efficiency but also ensure that the airport can accommodate the growing air traffic without compromising on service quality.

This decision underscores GACL’s commitment to continuous improvement and innovation in airport management.

A Strategic Win for Ghana’s Aviation Sector

Over the years, Ghana has worked diligently to position itself as a leader in West African aviation, focusing on improving infrastructure, enhancing customer service, and expanding international partnerships.

“The return of Virgin Atlantic Airline to operate from Ghana underscores the confidence in Ghana’s aviation industry. [This will] significantly boosts efforts to establish Ghana as the preferred aviation hub and leader in airport business in West Africa.”

The decision by Virgin Atlantic to resume operations is a testament to these efforts, reflecting a strong vote of confidence in the country’s aviation industry.

Virgin Atlantic’s presence in Ghana will likely have a ripple effect, attracting more global airlines to consider Ghana as a viable destination for their operations. This, in turn, will enhance the competitive landscape, encouraging improvements in service delivery and operational efficiency across the board.

Moreover, with a reputable airline like Virgin Atlantic in the mix, Ghana’s ambition to become the preferred aviation hub in the region is closer to reality.

The economic implications of Virgin Atlantic’s return are also worth noting. The aviation industry plays a crucial role in driving economic growth, particularly in emerging markets like Ghana.

Increased air traffic will stimulate the local economy, create jobs, and promote tourism, contributing to the overall development of the country. The influx of international travelers and businesspersons can catalyze investments in other sectors, including hospitality, retail, and real estate, further bolstering economic growth.

Virgin Atlantic’s return to Ghana is a positive development that will likely set the stage for further growth and innovation in the country’s aviation sector. As the 25th international airline to operate out of Kotoka International Airport, Virgin Atlantic’s presence adds to the diversity of airlines serving Ghana, offering passengers more options and fostering healthy competition among carriers.

Moreover, the airline’s use of the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, known for its fuel efficiency and passenger comfort, aligns with global trends towards more sustainable and environmentally friendly aviation practices. This is particularly relevant as the aviation industry faces increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint.

The collaboration between GACL and Virgin Atlantic will undoubtedly contribute to the continued growth and success of Ghana’s aviation industry, with positive ripple effects across the economy.
