Ministry of Finance Sensitizes SMEs in Oti Region

SMEs Growth and Opportunity Programme

The government has launched a record-setting initiative to bolster the growth of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Ghana. This marks the largest SME financing program in the nation’s history. Through this initiative, the government is channeling substantial resources into key institutions that support entrepreneurship and business development.

The Ghana Enterprise Agency and Ghana Exim Bank are receiving a combined total of GHS 700 million in funding to facilitate the growth of small and medium-sized enterprises. Additionally, the Development Bank Ghana (DBG) is making a significant contribution of approximately GHS 1.2 billion towards this effort.

This coordinated financial support aims to strengthen Ghana’s position as a prime hub for entrepreneurship and investment. In a further boost to this initiative, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) has committed to contributing $400 million to the program. The involvement of both domestic and international entities underscored the significance of this financing plan, which is set to invigorate the business landscape in Ghana.

Bail Delays Threaten Justice

In a speech delivered on behalf of the Minister of Finance, Dr. Amin by his Technical Advisor Dr. Abudu Abdul Ganiyu, highlighted the commitment to strengthening the country’s position as a hub for entrepreneurship and investment. The speech was delivered during a sensitization program designed to enhance SME awareness and support in the Oti Regions of Ghana.

Dr. Ganiyu outlined the government’s vision to support SMEs as the backbone of the Ghanaian economy. He emphasized the importance of creating an enabling environment that allows SMEs to thrive and contribute significantly to national development. Dr. Ganiyu stated:

“Our SMEs are the lifeblood of our economy, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure their success. The data is clear: Supporting SMEs is crucial to achieving our growth and development ambitions.”

Dr. Abudu Abdul Ganiyu the Minister of Finance, Dr. Amin by his Technical Advisor

This statement highlights the government’s understanding of the vital role SMEs play in the economy, not only as job creators but also as major contributors to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The focus on SMEs aligns with broader national goals of fostering inclusive growth and poverty reduction.

The Launch of the SME Growth and Opportunity Program

Meanwhile, In July the government launched the SME Growth and Opportunity Program, a significant initiative aimed at providing sustainable financing frameworks for the SME sector. The program seeks to bridge the financing gap that many SMEs face, particularly in accessing credit and technical support. Dr. Ganiyu stressed the importance of this initiative.

Since its launch, the program has seen a series of capacity-building initiatives across various regions, including the Northern Region. These efforts aim to equip SMEs with the necessary skills and resources to manage their businesses effectively and sustainably.

Meanwhile the Deputy minister for trade and industry Dr. Stephen Amoah called on all to join hands in creating an inclusive economy that benefits all. He asserted; ‘…the objective of the SMEs program is to develop a sustainable financial framework that allows for both the public and private sector to scale up financial and technical support for SMEs”

Building Capacity and Awareness

The Ministry of Finance has been proactive in organizing sensitization programs across the country. The recent program in the Oti Region focused on raising awareness about the opportunities available to SMEs, particularly in accessing credit and understanding their tax obligations. The program explored qualification criteria for accessing credit from various agencies and guided managing funds once accessed. This initiative is critical, as many SMEs struggle with financial management, which often leads to challenges in business growth and sustainability. Dr. Ganiyu emphasized the importance of financial literacy and proper fund management, stating:

“We must be intentional about providing access to financial resources, expertise, and capacity-building programs that empower to drive innovation, create jobs and stimulate economic growth.”

Dr. Abudu Abdul Ganiyu the Minister of Finance, Dr. Amin by his Technical Advisor

The focus on capacity building is in line with the government’s broader agenda to create a more resilient and competitive SME sector. By equipping SMEs with the knowledge and tools to manage their businesses effectively, the government aims to enhance their ability to contribute to national development.

The Northern Region’s Contribution to GDP

However, the Northern Region Minister on his part called on a coordinated efforts while proffering ideas to help the SMEs reach new height. Considering the Northern Region’s contribution to the GDP of Ghana, emphasized the importance of supporting SMEs in that region to drive economic growth.

The sensitization programs in the Northern and Oti Regions are part of a broader effort to ensure that all regions benefit from the government’s SME support initiatives. The government’s focus on regional sensitization and capacity building demonstrates a commitment to inclusive economic growth. By reaching out to SMEs in various regions, the government aims to ensure that the benefits of national development are felt across the country, not just in urban centers.

This collaborative approach is critical in ensuring that SMEs have access to the necessary resources and support to grow their businesses. By leveraging the strengths of both sectors, the government hopes to create a more sustainable and supportive environment for SMEs.

The government’s commitment to supporting SMEs is evident in its ongoing initiatives and programs. The SME Growth and Opportunity Program, along with regional sensitization efforts, are crucial steps in building a more resilient and competitive SME sector. Dr. Ganiyu concluded his speech with a call to action:

“It is our collective responsibility to ensure the success of our SMEs. “

Dr. Abudu Abdul Ganiyu the Minister of Finance, Dr. Amin by his Technical Advisor

As the government continues to prioritize SMEs as key drivers of economic growth, the focus on creating an enabling environment, providing access to financing, and building capacity will be critical in achieving the country’s development goals. The success of these initiatives will depend on the continued collaboration between the public and private sectors and the commitment of all stakeholders to support the growth and expansion of SMEs across the country. The government’s proactive approach to supporting SMEs through the SME Growth and Opportunity Program and regional sensitization efforts reflects a strong commitment to fostering entrepreneurship and investment.

By focusing on capacity building, access to financing, and public-private partnerships, the government is laying the foundation for a more resilient and prosperous SME sector that will contribute significantly to Ghana’s economic growth and development.
