The leader and founder of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) Mr. Kofi Akpaloo has expressed strong support for the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) call for an audit of the voter register by the Electoral Commission (EC). Kofi Akpaloo emphasized the importance of transparency and fairness in the electoral process and urged the EC to allow the NDC to conduct the requested audit.

Kofi Akpaloo argued that allowing the NDC to access the database and conduct a forensic audit would help eliminate doubts and suspicions surrounding the electoral process.

“I don’t see why the EC should resist this call. They should give them the database for them to do whatever they want to do with it.”

Kofi Akpaloo further added that, by granting access to the database, the EC could dispel any notions that it intended to rig the elections to favor any particular party. Kofi Akpaloo also expressed confidence in the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system, stating that it is difficult to manipulate the results. Kofi Akpaloo remarked, “Ghana’s election, you can’t rig it. I think you have followed Ghana’s election for some time. You know that even you, the media, you announce the results. It’s not the EC who does that.” This statement underscored his faith in the role of the media in ensuring transparency during the electoral process.

Addressing the EC’s Previous Admissions

However, the EC had previously admitted to errors in the final tally of results and misconduct by some of its officers. Kofi Akpaloo highlighted the importance of addressing these issues to ensure the credibility of the upcoming elections.

Kofi Akpaloo’s call for an audit aligns with the broader concern for transparency and fairness in the electoral process. But then he emphasized that the EC should allow the NDC to bring in an independent body,

“The EC should allow the NDC to bring KPMG, maybe private whatever, to come and do the forensic audit that they are asking for. To avoid this hullabaloo, because I don’t think it will end to anything.”

Ensuring Fairness and Eliminating Suspicions

Kofi Akpaloo also addressed the potential consequences of the EC’s refusal to grant the NDC’s request. Kofi Akpaloo warned that, if the EC did not allow the audit, it could give the NDC an unhealthy narrative about the entire elections.

“But If you don’t allow them to go into the data, you give them an undue advantage over some of us because everybody sitting somewhere will think that, oh, the EC wants to steal the election.”

To prevent this perception, Akpaloo advocated for complete transparency while expressing confidence that despite any changes, the LPG would still emerge victorious in the upcoming elections.

“The EC should allow them to do whatever they do. Even if the NDC has some numbers and they want to add, I will support that they should go and add it because whatever will happen, they will lose. [LPG is] winning this election. NDC will lose. We will win this election. I’m the next president of Ghana. Nobody can change that.”

Kofi Akpaloo’s remarks underscored his determination to lead Ghana and his belief in the LPG’s ability to secure victory. When asked about the LPG’s parliamentary campaign, Akpaloo revealed that the party plans to contest in all constituencies across the country. Kofi Akpaloo stated, “We are contesting in all the 40,000 plus polling stations. We are going everywhere.” However, he clarified that the LPG’s parliamentary contest would focus on one particular seat, emphasizing that, the presidential and parliamentary elections are distinct.

Critique of the NDC’s Nomination Process

This notwithstanding, Kofi Akpaloo took a jab at the NDC’s nomination process at the EC headquarters.

“We were watching NDC doing their filing of the nomination today, and John Mahama was not there… So, he should always get his information right before he comes to speak.”

This comment was a subtle critique of the NDC’s organization and preparation ahead of the elections. Kofi Akpaloo’s calling for the EC to allow the NDC to audit the voter register reflects his commitment to transparency and fairness in Ghana’s elections. He emphasized the importance of dispelling any suspicions of electoral manipulation and expressed confidence in his party’s chances of winning the upcoming elections.
