President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on journalists to uphold their responsibility as gatekeepers of truth in the upcoming 2024 elections, urging them to avoid the spread of misinformation that could compromise the integrity of the electoral process.

The President emphasized the importance of factual and balanced reporting, particularly as the nation gears up for a crucial electoral period.

Speaking at the 28th Ghana Journalists Association’s (GJA) Media Awards and the 75th anniversary of the GJA, held in Accra on September 28, President Akufo-Addo underscored the vital role that journalists play in ensuring fair and transparent elections.

“Every four years, Ghanaians go to the polls to choose their leaders, and in that process, the media plays an indispensable role.

“It’s through your work that citizens are informed about the policies of political parties, the integrity of candidates, and the issues that matter most to their lives.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

The President’s remarks come at a time when media coverage is seen as more influential than ever, given the proliferation of social media platforms and the rapid spread of information.

He praised the media for their critical contributions to Ghana’s democratic journey, particularly in their role of informing voters, monitoring polling stations, and reporting on irregularities during the electoral process.

“The responsibility of the media during elections cannot be overstated,” Akufo-Addo emphasized. “The peaceful transitions of power that we have been seeing in Ghana are no small part due to the diligence and integrity of the media.”

Ghana has long been regarded as a beacon of democracy in Africa, with peaceful transitions of power serving as a hallmark of its political stability.

The President’s comments reflected the importance of the media’s role in maintaining this reputation. He praised the efforts of journalists in providing accurate, unbiased information to the public, enabling citizens to make informed decisions at the ballot box.

However, President Akufo-Addo also expressed concerns about the challenges posed by disinformation and fake news, particularly in the fast-paced digital environment where rumors and false information can spread quickly.

He urged journalists to be vigilant in distinguishing truth from falsehoods, especially in the context of elections, where misinformation can distort public perception and undermine the democratic process.

President Akufo-Addo’s address highlighted the potential risks that misinformation poses to electoral integrity. He noted that while social media has allowed for greater access to information, it has also become a breeding ground for fake news, which can have serious implications for the political process.

Call for Balanced and Responsible Reporting

President Akufo-Addo further called on journalists to prioritize factual reporting over sensationalism, particularly at a time when emotions can run high, and public trust in the media can waver.

“The stakes are high and your role has never been more crucial. I stand before you not only as a president of the Republic but as someone who has worked alongside the media on this journey to freedom and democracy.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

While acknowledging the media’s critical role in the democratic process, Akufo-Addo reminded journalists that their power comes with immense responsibility.

He urged the press to avoid the temptation of sensationalism, which often leads to the distortion of facts for the sake of attracting attention.

“I remain deeply committed to ensuring that the media in Ghana remains free, vibrant, and independent. Your work is essential to the strength of our democracy, the integrity of our elections, and the progress of our nation.”

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo

As Ghana approaches the 2024 elections, the role of the media will be more important than ever in safeguarding the nation’s democratic principles. Journalists, according to the president, must continue to hold themselves to the highest standards of integrity, ensuring that their reporting is fair, accurate, and impartial.

The media must embrace its role as a defender of democracy, ensuring that facts, not falsehoods, guide the nation’s electoral choices.
