Today, October 7, 2024, marks one year since Hamas launched its devastating attack on Israel. As the sun rose, Israel paused to remember the harrowing events as citizens came together to honor the nearly 400 lives lost at the Nova music festival.
Ceremonies and memorials were held across the country, paying tribute to victims, hostages still held in Gaza, and the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in attempts to rescue them.
Among those gathered were the families of hostages, their hearts heavy with a mix of grief and fragile hope for their loved ones’ safe return. The anguish of waiting hung palpably in the air, a painful reminder of their unresolved pain.
Meanwhile, Israel has escalated its military operations on two fronts with heavy bombing raids and mass evacuation orders in southern Lebanon and Gaza.
Officials have also issued new threats of a retaliatory strike against Iran.
In an interview with Vaultz News, Mr. Henry Osabutey; a Human rights, Peace and Conflict studies expert, offered a poignant analysis of the war’s anniversary, emphasizing the deep emotional scars left on the Israeli society.
He noted that the October 7 commemoration today, is likely to evoke profound emotions within Israeli society, particularly among families of the hostages still trapped in Gaza.
While it serves to honor the resilience of communities impacted by the initial attack, it also serves as a painful reminder of the ongoing conflict and the unresolved hostage situation.
“For those, families, this commemoration might bring about a mix of grief, frustration, and anger as they continue to await answers and hope for the safe return of their loved ones.”

Giving his assessment of the situation as the war hits a one year mark, Osabutey pointed out that the situation remains incredibly complex and dire.
He acknowledged that amid continuous fighting, “peace feels very distant with no clear resolution in sight.”
He noted that both sides have suffered immense losses and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen daily.
He asserted that the longer the conflict persists, the more difficult it becomes for either side to find common ground for peace, adding that international efforts to mediate have struggled, leaving those caught in the middle feeling a profound sense of hopelessness.
Also, Osabutey addressed the notion that Israel is targeting Hezbollah as a distraction from Gaza.
He stated that while it’s conceivable that Israel is attempting to address multiple fronts, it’s crucial to recognize that Hezbollah represents a significant security threat.
According to him, the strikes on Hezbollah may be part of Israel’s broader strategy to prevent being overwhelmed by threats on multiple borders, rather than simply serving as a distraction from the Gaza crisis.
Israel’s Retaliation To Entrench Iran’s Involvement In Conflict
Last week, Iran launched a barrage of missiles on Israel and Israel is poised to retaliate.
When asked how Israel’s threats retaliatory strikes against Iran might influence Iran’s involvement in the conflict, Osabutey remarked that Iran’s missile strikes and Israel’s potential retaliation signify a dangerous escalation.
“If Israel carries out these retaliatory strikes, it could further entrench Iran’s involvement in the conflict, likely leading to increased direct support for groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. This situation may also draw in more regional players, increasing volatility.”
