Bawah Critiques Silence of 2016 “Agenda for Change” Advocates

Joyce Mogtari Bawah, Spokesperson for John Mahama has pointed out that many of those who once passionately championed the “agenda for change” in 2016 have now fallen silent when it comes to holding the current government accountable.

Bawah highlighted that many former advocates for change now appear either unwilling or unable to openly criticize President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia.

She noted their reluctance to hold them accountable for their failure to effectively tackle the growing threat of illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

“We all remember that no one blamed former President Kufuor for not finding a sustainable solution to the power distribution challenges Ghana faced, nor did they write long sermons about how John Mahama had inherited the power crisis that peaked during his presidency”.

Bawah pointed out that the individuals who were once outspoken and vocal advocates for change have now fallen conspicuously silent.

The NDC Communicator observed that they are unwilling to hold President Akufo-Addo and Vice President Bawumia accountable, despite the need for critical evaluation of their actions.

According to Bawah, these individuals seem to be embarrassed by their unwavering support for the current administration and are now grappling with how to regain their credibility and influence.

As such, she questioned why these individuals, who made no excuses for former President Mahama during the power crisis and held him entirely responsible for a historical issue he did not create, are now so hesitant to acknowledge the failures of the current administration.

The astute lawyer challenged them to reflect on their inconsistent approach to accountability and to apply the same scrutiny to the current leaders as they did to their predecessors.

She pointed out that President Akufo-Addo, who famously promised to put his presidency on the line to combat galamsey, has failed spectacularly to address this pressing issue.

Bawah urged them to reflect on the inconsistency in their criticisms and hold the current leadership to the same standards they applied in the past.

Bawah Warns of Ghana’s Existential Threat

Furthermore, Joyce Mogtari Bawah emphasized that Ghana is facing an existential threat.

She highlighted that polluted rivers, unprecedented illegal mining in forest reserves, and contaminated water sources are jeopardizing not only the environment but also the nation’s food supplies.

“Yet, instead of addressing these critical issues, some choose to write long, convoluted statements, seeking praise and validation they no longer deserve. Their credibility has vanished, and so too has their ability to convince anyone of their cause”.

Accordingly, she pointed out that the pollution of rivers by galamsey, which are now flowing into the Atlantic Ocean, should serve as a wake-up call for everyone.

This alarming reality, Bawah indicated, highlights the global dimension of the crisis and the far-reaching consequences of illegal mining activities.

She stated that this issue has transcended being merely a Ghanaian problem; it has evolved into an international environmental disaster that poses a significant threat to the entire ecosystem. “This has never happened before, and it underscores the seriousness of the threat we face”.

The NDC communicator further asserted that there is no doubt John Dramani Mahama will win the next election.

As such, she emphasized that just as John Mahama successfully resolved the power crisis, he will also lead the charge against galamsey and help the nation reclaim its environmental integrity.

However, Joyce Bawah pointed out that the real frustration of these former critics stems from the impending realization that their unfounded condemnations of Mahama will soon be proven wrong.

She asserted that as Mahama’s leadership and potential to address pressing issues like galamsey become clearer, these critics are resorting to desperate measures.

Bawah further accused these critics of trying to equate two administrations that have little in common.

She argued that their intent is to deflect attention from their previous assertions and preserve their credibility in the political landscape.
