The United Nations Security Council will convene on Monday, October 28, 2024, following Israel’s retaliatory strikes in Iran.

Iran requested the Security Council meeting, claiming that Israel violated international law with its direct strikes against it.

Israel hit military targets in Iran during its high-stakes retaliation to Tehran’s ballistic missile barrage earlier this month.

Iran appeared to downplay the strikes overall, reporting limited damage at military sites.

Four members of Iran’s military were killed in the attack, according to state-run media, and Tehran said afterward that it is “entitled” to defend itself.

Iranian President, Masoud Pezeshkian offered his condolences to the families of troops killed in Israeli attacks, saying that they sacrificed their lives to defend their homeland.

In a letter to the Security Council, Iran’s permanent mission to the UN said that Israel’s actions “constitute a serious violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity” of Iran and are “a flagrant breach of international law and the United Nations Charter.”

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi disclosed that he wrote to UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres to condemn the Israeli attacks against Iran and also call for an immediate session of the UN Security Council.

“Although there is no hope that with the presence of the US and some other countries, any product will come out of the Security Council that would work toward reducing tensions and preventing crimes by the Zionist regime, we are pursuing this.”

Abbas Araghchi

Tehran’s top diplomat said that the meeting would provide a good opportunity for Iran and others in the region who condemned the attack to emphasise their positions.

Araghchi asserted that the US “is standing behind Israel with all its capabilities” and is a “partner in the crimes of the Zionist regime.”

He stated that “the participation of the Americans is clear for us” in the Israeli attacks, adding, “At the very least, they provided the air force of the Zionist regime with an air corridor.”

Iran’s Parliament Speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said in a televised opening address to a closed-doors meeting to evaluate the Israeli attack, that Israel’s attacks on his country were a failure when compared with Iran’s October 1 missile attacks and promised that Tehran will retaliate.

“The Zionist regime has no achievement but genocide and the mass murder of defenceless children and women in Gaza and Lebanon, and today, it has no credibility on the international stage.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran, in the framework of its inherent right of legitimate self-defence, and Article 51 of the UN Charter, considers itself to have the right to defend itself, and a response to this violation will be certain and in adherence to considerations.”

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf

Ghalibaf also called the US “the main partner in all the war crimes” of Israel, and said that Washington must “reign in” Israel and push it towards reaching a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon to stop the killing of civilians.

The Parliament Speaker thanked regional neighbours for condemning the Israeli attacks on Iran.

Israeli Envoy Decries Iran’s Request For Security Council Meeting

Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon said that Iran’s request was “another attempt by Iran to harm us, this time in the political arena,” vowing to “stand up for Israel’s right to defend itself.”

Danon called claims that Israel has violated international law “ridiculous.”

“Iran will not be allowed to continue hiding behind its affiliates, as long as Iran continues to threaten and try to harm us, it will pay the price.”

Danny Danon

Meanwhile, an Israeli official divulged that Israel’s security cabinet will meet today, Sunday, October 27, 2024, to discuss the strikes and the possibility of an Iranian response.
