Ballot Boxes, General Elections in Ghana

Agbogbomefia of the Asogli State Togbe Afede XIV has made a passionate call for free and fair elections in the upcoming December 7 polls.

Speaking at the 9th congregation of Ensign Global College in the Eastern Region, he urged the Electoral Commission (EC) to guarantee a level playing field for all political parties.

Togbe Afede XIV emphasized that such measures would not only boost Ghana’s democratic credentials but also preserve national peace and prevent disputes over election results.

The prominent leader also raised concerns about Ghana’s judiciary, describing it as increasingly becoming unbecoming in its rulings.

He emphasized that some recent judicial decisions have undermined public trust and failed to strengthen democracy. He lamented;

“It’s unfortunate that as the former Chief Justice said, that the judiciary has become very predictable. It’s unfortunate, you know some of the decisions that emanate from the judiciary have not been very inspiring. We want a judiciary that we all know exists to protect our freedoms and ensure fair justice delivery.”

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s Housing Plan

Meanwhile, On the campaign trail, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate, pledged to address Ghana’s housing deficit by constructing housing units in every district if elected.

Speaking in Dobroso, a town in the Central Frontlands Constituency of the Ashanti Region, he stressed that affordable housing would be a key priority for his administration.

The initiative aims to alleviate the severe housing crisis that has left many Ghanaians without adequate shelter.

Despite mounting concerns over economic hardships, the NPP remains optimistic about retaining power after the December 7 elections.

As such, Peter Mac Manu, chairman of the NPP Electoral Campaign Committee has dismissed claims that hardship would sway voters against the party.

He expressed confidence in the appeal of Dr. Bawumia’s policies, particularly free senior high school (SHS) education.

“If anybody tells you that he is paying so much for free SHS so it’s expensive, I will say that is not the truth.”

He recounted his personal experience visiting the Teachers’ Hall, where parents eagerly sought enrollment for their children.

“Go and see the numbers, I was marveled. If people don’t want it why was the place so overcrowded? I went there myself and [saw the numbers]?…  Seeing they say is believing.”

Mac Manu further defended the NPP’s economic management, dismissing criticisms based on the exchange rate.

He pointed out that despite economic challenges, significant progress had been made.

“So, when people say things like the dollar was 4.20 pesewas and it’s now 17Ghs, I laughed. Because 4.20pesewas, were they able to buy chalk [or] pay salaries? Some teachers were not paid for years. What was the size of the economy and what is it now? So, you want to use the dollar as the only yardstick for measuring an economy?’’

Albeit, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by its presidential candidate equally continues to campaign actively.

The campaign trail ahead of Ghana’s December elections has been vibrant and contentious, with key political figures outlining their visions for the country.

However, Togbe Afede XIV’s call for free and fair elections resonates as a reminder of the importance of democracy and justice.

Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia’s housing plan and the NPP’s optimism underscore the contrasting narratives of progress and hardship that dominate the political landscape.

The ultimate decision remains in the hands of Ghanaians as they weigh promises, challenges, and leadership credibility at the polls.
